What About Your Retirement Plans?

All business owners, big and small, should set up a retirement plan. It will provide a valuable tax break for owners plus tax-deferred growth for savings, and deciding which plan is best for you and your business doesn't have to be a head-scratching experience.

Are you saving too little for retirement? Most people do. Many small business owners don't even think of about retirement. The big factor in building wealth is getting money in the system and giving it time to work.

What about Employees' Benefits? Forgot about it, or to complicated. In Namibia we have a Social Security Fund where Employers and Employees have to contribute. Countries have their own systems, but some private possibilities are also available, but not always affordable.

By putting away money for their own retirement, employees also help you and your business. And if you employ family members, you may be able to shift income to those in lower tax brackets - as long as they provide bona fide services to your business. A working spouse may also let you provide a medical plan that covers your entire family and is deductible for your business. Please refer to you own countries Tax Systems.

But unless you clearly define goals from start-up to when you plan to exit the business, you won't reap all the benefits. Write down what you want, along with an estimate of how much each goal will cost and when you'll need the money. Otherwise, you could become too financially exposed yourself.

The Right Plan

A focused retirement plan can pay big benefits. And if you have specific target and time period, you can check periodically to see if you on track. Do you really want to share profits with your employees? Or do you think Social Security (WHERE APPLICABLE) and group life insurance is enough? Surprisingly few small business owners have adequate health insurance, even for themselves.

Late getting started? If you are advanced in years, your insurance will be more expensive. So young people start now, to avoid paying too much. You need an Investment Plan that can work in variety of economic environments, and that focus on stocks, bonds, and money-market securities.

And if you are in your twenties, and even thirties, the greatest asset you have right now isn't money - it is time.
