In Rome, the Cat was once considered a symbol of liberty and regarded as the guardian of the household.

Before the middle ages, for thousands of years, the Cat was looked upon as sacred in many traditions.

Cats first appeared about 40 million years ago, and first began to be tamed in Egypt around 3,500 B.C. They were seen as a valuable asset to Egyptian farms owing to their skills in hunting mice, rats, and snakes. Cats became pampered pets and were honoured in paintings and sculptures.

But by 1500 B.C., the Egyptians considered them sacred and the punishment for killing a Cat was death. When someone lost their pet cat to death, they shaved off their eyebrows in mourning.

The Egyptians worshiped Bastet, the goddess of love and fertility, who was represented as having the head of a cat and the body of a woman.

One Greek tradition tells how Hecate, goddess of the underworld, had once become a cat to save her own life when the monster Typhon tried to take of the world and rule both heaven and earth.

To escape him, Hecate had taken on feline features, resuming to her original figure only once Zeus had slain the monster. Cats then became her favourite creature. Hecate was considered a goddess of the night, and associated with the moon, like her favourites.

In the Far East, about 1000 B.C., cats were used to keep rodents from destroying silkworm cocoons and temple manuscripts. Admired for their beauty and mystery, they were a favourite subject for Chinese and Japanese writers and artists.

Freyja, the goddess of love and fertility, according to Norse mythology, originated a powerful kind of magic called seithr. In seithr, certain women communicated with spirits to learn about the future. This associated Freyja with witchcraft. She sometimes took the form of a bird and sometimes travelled in a carriage pulled by cats.

Christianity, when in its conquest of paganism, which it looked on as the work of the devil, branded Freyja as a witch, and saw the cat as the companion of all witches, which served the power of darknes. Nevertheless, they continued to honour her every Friday, the day named to pay homage to her.

In Europe in the Middle Ages, thousands of cats were killed, owing to their assoiciation with witchcraft which resulted in a dramatic rise in the population of rats throughout Europe, contributing to the spread of the Black Plague. A forth of the population of Europe was killed by the plague during the 1300's.

The realization of the importance of cats controlling rodents, helped them to regain their popularity, so much so, that the early explorers and settlers of the United States and Canada, took them with them from Europe.

Beautiful, agile, and mysterious, the Cat is loved today too, for that independent aspect of its character; its ability to be and do, where and what it wants, and no power on earth will change its mind. Every "owner" can be rest assured that their feline companion is with them through choice.
