Deciding For Abundance
by Cathy GoodwinYou're facing a tough decision. Leave a comfortable career, where money falls effortlessly into your savings account. Maybe you buy a new car every two years, enjoy a splurge-filled vacation each year, or give generously to your favorite charities.
"Abundance is not about money," but it's often hard to feel abundant as you watch your savings dwindle or realize that a once-routine purchase has now become a luxury.
"Maybe you don't need so much money."
It is true that people often spend less money as they move to more satisfying lives. Shopping becomes a necessity, not a recreation.
However, I believe that we each have our own symbols of abundance. When those symbols are missing in our lives, we feel deprived. Some clients move happily from a palace to a hut and never look back. Others feel deprived when their income falls below $300,000 or their checking account drops below five figures.
Over the next few weeks, pay attention to times, places and possessions that create a feeling of abundance for you. Here are some examples that others have shared:
- Walking the dog on a frosty morning, feeling nice and toasty in my favorite parka
- Realizing we don't have to leave the house all weekend
- Sightseeing in London with a leisurely break for tea
- Admiring the freezer stocked with enough food for a month, in case we're snowed in
- Brunch in a restaurant with a view
- The latest best-selling novel, waiting in the living room
- Orchestra seats at the hottest show in town
- Signing the documents to buy a house
- Renting a wonderful apartment, convenient to everything
- Buying a new car
- Living without a car and walking everywhere
Your abundance symbols often hold the key to your successful career change. You may find that your symbols cost almost nothing -- or cost a great deal. Once you've identified your own symbols, you will most likely find that you can make a more enlightened decision, leading to a successful and fulfilling new career.
