How To Get Things Done In 6 Easy Steps

One spring, I set out to clean and reorganize my home office. I started but never finished. In the beginning, I had a lot of energy and drive.

Every Saturday, I spent 2-to-3 hours cleaning, throwing away items I no longer needed, and reorganizing drawers and bookcases. As summer approached, I became less motivated to complete this project. I spent less time in my office and more time in the garden.

The following spring, I took a different approach. On January 1st, I set a completion date of February 28th. I decided to spend 30 minutes 3-to-4 times a week on my office. I felt much better allocating smaller amounts of time because I saw that I could still spend time on other tasks and hobbies.

Step 4: Divide the task into smaller steps.

Sometimes when you divide a task into smaller steps, the task gets done a lot faster. You may find that after you complete a smaller step that you have more energy to continue on. You can also celebrate the completion of each step as an accomplishment.

I used this trick on my home office project. I made a list of the major tasks I wanted to accomplish. Then, I listed sub-tasks for each task. Using this method, I was able to complete the project in less time. What a sense of accomplishment!

Step 5: Do the tasks you do well, and delegate the rest.

This is the real secret to accomplishing more in less time.

One way to avoid procrastination is to delegate the tasks you are not good at to someone who is. That way, you can concentrate on those tasks you do well, and enjoy doing them. Well-organized people do this a lot. That is why they accomplish more in less time. And, did you ever notice that when you perform an activity you are good at, "time flies"? Before you know it, you have achieved your goal.

I tend to avoid tedious tasks like making labels for file folders. On the other hand, my husband, Ed enjoys them. So, I ask for his assistance. He helps, and enjoys it immensely.

Step 6: This is the best one! Once your task is complete, reward yourself for a job well done.

You deserve to celebrate. Pick a reward for yourself. Maybe you like going to a movie or out to dinner with your best friend. Or, you might want to treat yourself to a massage. Make a decision at the beginning of your project what your reward will be. You might find that the anticipation of receiving a reward motivates you to get the project done.

Whether or not you become a well-organized person who always gets things done, consider using these tricks. Apply them to your next project or task. And remember to have fun!
