"I have always wanted to be an artist, but somehow I ended up as an accountant. My job is okay but I am feeling increasingly frustrated because I never developed my talents. Where do I begin?"

Right here -- seven tips to get started:

1. Follow the Artist's Way program, a do-it-yourself course for blocked creatives. If you really do the assignments, you will definitely get more creativity into your life.

2. Why do you want to develop your creativity? Personal growth? Fun? Sell your creative output for money? The answer to this question will determine how best to proceed.

3. Got a book or painting inside you? Feel you "should" use your talents? Lawrence Block once pointed out that no one has an obligation to write. We have plenty of books already. If you have to force yourself, why bother? And if you stop feeling "should," you may blossom spontaneously.

4. Recognize that there will never be a perfect time to write, draw or play music, even if you quit your job to pursue creativity full-time.

5. Take a class with a supportive but demanding instructor. Nearly every creative person I know has benefited from a class -- just make sure it's right for you.

6. Get creative in a new medium. Pushing yourself to write? Take an art class. Want to paint? Take Acting for Newbies.

7. Some people express their creativity through working at their jobs, gardening, creating a home, parenting or dog training. Once you recognize your own creative spark, you can translate your energies to more "artistic" media.

If you find yourself losing motivation, forget about expressing your creativity for awhile. Concentrate on job, family, travel and other parts of your life. Eventually, you may gravitate to a creative project, when the time is right. Or, more likely, you realize you've been extremely creative all along -- you just didn't recognize the signs!
