I've always fascinated been fascinated by people who fall into their careers -- sometimes literally. My neighbor Ed found his career at age ten, he says, when he fell from the choir loft into the church organ. When a specialist showed up to fix the damage, Ed got himself hired as an apprentice. Now he owns a firm that repairs church organs all over the region
Three Dog Bakery was formed when a dog refused to eat. The vet suggested, "Why don't you cook for her?" The dog's owner had no idea where to begin. He modified a cookie recipe and the dog wolfed it down. That was the beginning of a chain of stores targeted to the spoiled dog, now serving pampered felines as well.
In her book, Fighting Fire, Caroline Paul describes the unexpected event that changed her life forever. While she was working out at the gym, a fire department recruiter handed her a leaflet, saying, "You're really fit. The Fire Department wants women. Why don't you apply?"
And I've long lost the source of this story, which I read in a newspaper many years ago. A young man was stopped by the Highway Patrol as he was speeding down the California highways.
"You're going fast," said the officer, "but you handled the car well. How would you like to speed all day -- legally?"
Soon afterward, the young man found himself behind the wheel of his own CHP car, legally driving ninety miles an hour and more.
Maybe you suspect that most people find careers this way, rather than the tried-and-true step-by-step process recommended by most career books: test your aptitude and interest, peruse a list of careers, interview for information and find your true match.
You're right. Career researchers are beginning to appreciate the role of serendipity in our lives and choices. The question is, how can you make more chance events happen?
Researchers like to quote the saying attributed to Louis Pasteur, "Chance favors a prepared mind." We all hear messages but most of us ignore them. We are too caught up in our own plans or we aren't flexible enough to respond.
Still, once you realize that career and life changes often follow a feeling of being hit by a two-by-four, you can become more receptive to life's happenstance.
An interruption can be seen as a message rather than a nuisance. And sometimes an unexpected encounter can transport you, like a magic carpet, to a place you never heard of, but which feels very much like coming home.
