Creating a Healthy Information Diet for the Planet by Jennifer Tribe
Knowledge is power. Content is king. But can there be too much of a good thing?
Information has become as abundant and as common as the air we breathe. Everywhere we turn, we face more: more messages, more advertising, more things to read and watch and hear.
In 2002, we humans created and stored five exabytes of brand new information, according to researchers at the University of California at Berkeley. That doesn't even count the 18 exabytes of new information that flowed through phone lines, across the Internet, and over TV and radio broadcasts, not to mention all the information produced in earlier years.
How much is five exabytes, you ask? Oh, about five billion gigabytes. That's the equivalent of 500,000 print libraries the size of the Library of Congress. Or 800MB of information for every man, woman and child on the planet.
How can we possibly process and use all that information? The answer, of course, is that we can't. We are absolutely overloaded, our brains flooded with more input than we have evolved to deal with.
The Effects of Information Overload
Studies over the past 30 years show that information overload can have serious effects on our emotional, mental and physical well-being. Stress, high blood pressure, eye strain, irritability, restlessness, and a tendency to be easily distracted are just the tip of the iceberg.
And we're not just talking about the effects of information you don't want, like telemarketers calling at dinner or annoying pop-up ads. You can also feel stressed about information you actually invite into your life, like all the novels piled on your bedside table that you just never seem to find time to read.
Another side effect of abundant information is that information becomes less valuable. Supply and demand is an inviolable law. When there's too much supply and not enough demand, the value of an item drops.
Imagine how much you would have cherished a book if you were a 12th century monk who had just copied out the manuscript by hand. Compare that to how much you value the sheaves of paper you can print out in seconds from your computer.
What Does This Mean for Information Producers?
You might wonder where I'm going with all of this. Do I think a wealth of knowledge is a bad thing? Do I think we should stop creating information products? No, absolutely not.
The answer to obesity is not to stop eating but to be more selective about what you eat, to choose high-quality nutritious foods. And the answer to the information glut is also to be selective. As information producers, I believe that means we have a responsibility to be selective about what we create, to deliver "nutritious" and satisfying information to consumers.
This, of course, opens up a whole new can of worms. How do we determine the difference between helpful information and pure noise, the information world's equivalent of fast food?
We can very quickly fall into value judgements, dividing information into "good" and "bad" when it's far from being that simple. I've tried to come up with some helpful criteria. I call these the Principles of Information Integrity, and you can view them on my web site at Juiced Consulting.
I want to know what you think about information overload and its relevance to information producers and marketers. Is it much ado about nothing? Or is it something you think about seriously? Email your thoughts and comments to service@juicedconsulting.com.

Creating Environments That Nurture Success
An environment is anything that supports you to be or to perform a certain way. People often don't think of these things as environments, but they most definitely are. Everything around you has some impact on you and how you do what you do. If there is something in your life that is not the way you want it to be, look to see what mechanisms are in place that are encouraging or reinforcing this outcome. |
