Home For the Holidays
Family Dynamics and The Art of Compromise
It's time to go home for the holidays. Since going away to college, you come and go as you please. Eat and sleep when you feel like it, and report to no one. Now it's time to get together with old friends, party 'til dawn, and sleep all day. It's the perfect way to let loose before to going back to the college grind, right? Right?
Alas, this lifestyle won't go over well with most families. Demonstrate that new found maturity by being considerate of others-holidays are about family, after all. Of course, it's important to spend time catching up with friends; just make sure to schedule some quality time with the 'rents. Remember, you can go back to living the independent lifestyle soon enough. The following tips will help college students communicate effectively and come up with a plan to make the holidays fun-and peaceful-for the whole family.

Ways Your Emotions Can Be Making You Sick
The field with the long name -- psychoneuroimmunology -- provides new confirmation daily of what we've long suspected -- the link between our emotions and our well-being. The good news is emotional intelligence can be learned. "You can empower people to alter their perceptions," Christopher Coe, Ph.D., says, "and thereby to prevent these immune changes from occurring."

Fair Fighting
Do you ever worry that if you argue too much with your spouse you'll end up getting a divorce? Some people believe that when two people are happy in their relationship, they should never argue. However, in real life, disagreement is inevitable at some point in any relationship. Excessive fighting can certainly take a toll on you and your relationships. Heated arguments with your partner in which there is a great deal of blame, criticism, or withdrawal are bad for your health.

EQ for Balance
Most of us these days are concerned about our wellness and we're doing what we can to alleviate stress and achieve a healthy balance in our lives. We think about what we eat, we exercise, and we try and manage our emotional states, eliminating what stress we can, and trying to cope better with the rest of it.
Underlying all our efforts is the fact that we depend upon our immune systems for our health. The rise of auto-immune deficiency diseases is making this more evident to us all the time. Our immune systems are our first, and last, line of defense against disease, and they are directly effected by our emotional states.

Feng Shui
Bright and Reflective Objects
To Enhance Your Prosperity
In traditional Chinese Feng Shui the use or avoidance of mirrors as well as the careful placement of bright objects is said to enhance the energy of the space.
All kinds of bright objects such as glass, mirrors, crystals and anything with a reflective surface can be used to bring light into dark spaces. Corners are particularly important as they tend to trap and stagnate energy, just like an eddy in a stream. The light will keep that energy flowing

Five Ways to Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude
Oprah Winfrey and Sarah Ban Breathnach, author of Simple Abundance, speak often of the importance of a Gratitude Journal, in which, at the end of each day, they record five things that they're grateful for.
Regardless of whether you record these items, spend some time each day to focus on the little things in your life that make each day special. Perhaps it's your child's toothless grin. A warm home. Delicious food enjoyed with family.

Zen Gardening ... Key Elements
There are two main elements to creating the perfect zen garden. Of which are rocks and sand. The rocks represent mountains and grounding, while the sand helps to represent flowing water. However, this sand shouldn't be just any ordinary beach or garden variety sand. Instead you should purchase enough crushed granite sand to fill your space. Whether it be outside or in. Of which can be found in three different shades white, gray, or beige.
You should try to avoid using light tinted granite sand in sunny areas, as it will produce glare and cut back on the zen-like feeling you wish to achieve. Instead use these lighter colors in shady areas or within your office or other indoor gardens. While you don't need a container for an out-door zen garden, you can find many different platforms for an office-sized zen garden. Whether it be online at websites such as this one, or at a local Feng Shui shop.

Balancing the Beams
Feng Shui and the Architectural Challenge
of Exposed Ceiling Beams
The look of exposed beams in a home can be a stunning architectural feature. One look and it's easy to see why they are so popular. I like them myself. But in feng shui, exposed ceiling beams can be tricky. They can disrupt the flow of chi in a room and the line of an exposed beam cutting across your body while you're sleeping is especially worrisome.
Exposed beams in other parts of the house, such as a living room or den seem to pose less of a feng shui problem. The time a person spends directly under a beam line seems to be a big part of the issue. Hence the reason why bedroom beams are troublesome -- because you spend 1/3 of your day directly under them without really moving much.

A Japanese Garden is Not
Your Ordinary Garden
Japanese gardening is much different from the Western style garden. Most would say that a Japanese garden is far more soul soothing and inspires meditation. Japanese gardening is a cultural form of gardening that is meant to produce a scene that mimics nature as much as possible. Using trees, shrubs, rocks, sand, artificial hills, ponds, and flowing water the garden becomes an art form.

The Test
As I reflect on the week I spent with my family celebrating the holiday season I am awed and humbled by the precarious balance of emotions when family comes together. I was looking forward to my parents, children and extended family gathering at my newly renovated home to spend a few days of laughter, connection and great food.
My parents came a few days earlier than the rest of the gang. It had been a while since we'd seen each other. I have a close relationship with my parents and I was excited to be with them.

Sneezing Your Head Off?
Dealing with Pollen
And Air-Borne Allergies
We had an especially wet winter in my part of the country this year -- and now an especially windy spring. Trees, flowers, weeds and grasses are all blooming and lush -- and their pollen is blowing all over the place. Every day brings another round.
In response, our cats have bouts of sneezing ... and even my husband and I, who are not normally bothered with allergies, have moments of sniffling, coughing and hoarseness that seem somehow tied to all this activity in the air. It gives me such sympathy for people who really suffer with springtime allergies, so I did some research on how to protect yourself if you're one of those unfortunate souls. Here are some of the tips and suggestions I found.

The Sound of a Most Reluctant Silence
2009 was a horrible year for a lot of people I know. Me included. I don't recall it starting out to be a train wreck, but here at the end, in very cruel ways, it was. So much that I was careful not to wish too many folks, "Happy New Year" as 2010 slipped quietly into place.
The best I could do was to tell them sincerely, "I hope the new year will be better." And we agreed that would be nice -- for all of us. Some of the losses we were both trying to console each other for and avoid mentioning out loud have simply been too awful to process in the short time since they happened.
