Notes on the Major Arcana

• The Major Arcana of the Tarot depicts a course in personal development -- the legendary Hero's Journey, from innocence to wisdom. Some students of the Tarot believe this particular sequence of cards is essentially intended to be -- as well as to show -- a path to enlightenment -- a means of discovering the true Self.

• The Fool is the Hero of the Tarot -- who embarks on a journey whose story unfolds in the subsequent images of the Major Arcana. It is indeed and marvelous archetypal story of human life. On his adventure, the Fool meets challenges, overcomes obstacles, learns lessons, experiences irrevocable change, achieves goals, and gains wisdom.

• There are those who say the Tarot, through proper meditation, understanding, and contemplation, provides a channel into the soul of the world, the anima mundi -- which is, in fact, a complete repository of all human knowledge and experience. Some liken it to a cosmic, universal library, containing the experiences, memories, information, and wisdom of all humankind. This infinite source of knowledge extends into the past, contains the present, and encompasses the future in its miraculous, unfolding expression of creation and change.

• This source of knowledge, sometimes known as the Akashic records, is available to anyone willing to embark on a spiritual path and make the effort of deep contemplation. This collective pool of conscious and unconscious knowledge contains the basic figures depicted in literature, drama, religious stories and parables, mythology, legends, fantasy and fairy tales.

• The figures and pictures in the Tarot's Major Arcana literally "strike a chord" -- eliciting a deep, resonant response from the unconscious -- the soul, if you will -- of the individual studying them. Familiarity with these archetypal images draws forth the hidden meanings and powers that reside at the most profound levels of humanity's collective awareness.

• From there, rising into consciousness, these primal powers surface where they can be consciously, deliberately, integrated into the individual's life and daily existence.
