There are 22 cards in the Major Arcana of the traditional Tarot deck ... and card correspondences for each of the 10 planets and 12 signs of traditional Astrology. This series of articles describes in detail those correspondences.

ARIES, MARS -- THE EMPEROR, THE TOWER

The Emperor is card number 4 in the Major Arcana. It is the first Major Arcana card that correlates to an astrological sign, not a planet, and appropriately, that sign is Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac. The Emperor is quintessential male energy, the ultimate masculine archetype in all its power and glory.

The Emperor combines the strength, assets, experience, competence, authority, dimension, and wisdom of all four Kings of the Minor Arcana into one extraordinary, literally superhuman, expression of elemental force. In this time when social preferences deem it more politically correct to honor the concept of equality between males and females, it can sound rather sexist to describe such emphatic maleness in the symbolism of Emperor energy.

But out of respect for what is truly the nature of creation, where maleness and femaleness are equally essential but by no means the same, we are really left with that as the final truth. So let's take that fact as a given ... and move on.
