For The Fool in Us All
by Rebecca Brents
The Fool is Card 0 in the Tarot, the foundation energy of the Major Arcana. Its metaphors symbolize the unique, adventurous, exuberant human spirit in all of us, the confident and joy-filled beings we were meant to be. Of course, Life ... and Other People ... sometimes force us to withdraw, retreat, hold ourselves back, smother our creative zest, and make timid choices about what to be, how to act, what to do -- often for very sad reasons.
The Fool card upright in a Tarot layout is a harbinger of change for the querent who receives it. It depicts being open, trusting, receptive, optimistic, and proactive in meeting the challenges and unique opportunities of life. It is an indicator of new beginnings, making wise decisions, taking risks, and expecting success. Sometimes the willingness to simply take a deep breath and go for it ... has a power all its own.
When The Fool is reversed in a layout, it indicates something is twisted, distorted, misdirected, immature, repressed, or corrupted in the easy, positive expression of Fool energy regarding the querent's issue.
When your Fool energy is blocked, you are anxious and worried, afraid to commit, unwilling to take chances, pessimistic, paralyzed, stagnant, and paranoid. You react under pressure. You do what is expedient ... or what you are forced to do. You take the easy way out, the path of least resistance. You hold back -- or charge ahead blindly by making ill-considered, inappropriate choices.
You have no faith in yourself or the wisdom of your own heart. You may be running fast, but going nowhere. You feel confused, wishy-washy, reactive, and beaten. You "settle" for what you think is easy to get rather than reaching for what you really want. You don't speak up; you don't think for yourself. You constantly expect the worst ... and you wind up losing the best part of who you truly are, the unique spark of life that is only yours and that can belong to no one else.
To live in the presence of quashed Fool energy is a tragedy. Your special spirit is never born, never grows, never gets the right attention, never makes its mark on life, never achieves its desires, never makes a difference ... and your special place in the great mosaic in life remains forever dark and empty.
To honor the energy of The Fool in your life, to reawaken what has gone dormant, or reclaim what you have lost in the corner of your Soul where the Fool resides, you need to shake things up a bit -- and this may not be as easy as it sounds.
The Fool requires that you take back your power, set boundaries and insist everyone, including you¸ honor them. It requires that you take chances, do something zany, act a little bit crazy, and break the stranglehold self-consciousness may have on your desire to be yourself!! The Fool is willing to be foolish ... as long as doing so hurts no one and breaks down some of the rigidities and expectations that can encroach on a life until you no longer own yourself and can hardly breath from the strain and pressure.
The things one can do to honor Fool energy can vary greatly from person to person ... but its bottom-line requirement is that you make yourself a little uncomfortable in order to follow your own rules and live by your own lights, for a few hours, a few days ... or maybe for a lifetime, in which case, pushing the envelope on what is uncomfortable and outrageous to you will be a constantly moving target as you become more and more willing to do your own thing and answer only to your own conscience. Conscience certainly needs to be part of your decision, but conscience is also a far better guide than it is a master.
For some of us, simply wearing flashy prints and bright colors instead of our usual business clothes and "power suits" breaks the mold of social expectations enough to make us squirm. For others it takes, well, a little more to be uncomfortably outrageous. But you can always think of ways to let The Fool in you come out and play ... and doing so can tell you a lot about yourself and the rules you think you have to live by.
What on this list would you be willing to try for the sake of honoring The Fool? And what is simply "out of the question"?
- Singing out loud in public
- Blowing bubblegum bubbles so big they pop all over your face
- Going to the grocery store in your pajamas, robe, and slippers
- Skinny dipping with a group of friends
- Telling the waiter, "Surprise me," the next time you go to a restaurant for a meal
- Dying your hair blue
- Offering a hug to a stranger who looks like he could use one
- Taking a drive through the streets or countryside with no destination in mind at all, turning whenever the spirit moves you -- just to see what you find
- Sending a card or letter to someone you really like ... and someone you really cannot stand ... telling them both why ... and signing your real name
You can certainly add to this list yourself ... because you are the expert on your own comfort levels -- and there are far more Fool-like possibilities than the innocuous and bland ones I've listed here. But if these ideas alone give you pause ... maybe it's time to offer the Fool in your nature a little more support and respect.
The Fool is Everyman (and Everywoman) beginning his Heroic Journey of learning, with hope, confidence, and trust, through the Cards of the Major Arcana ... and through the Journey of Life itself. The Fool in you is that special light that can shine in no one else ... and that needs your care and attention to keep it alit and alive. Feed it today. Cherish it tomorrow.
