There are 22 cards in the Major Arcana of the traditional Tarot deck ... and card correspondences for each of the 10 planets and 12 signs of traditional Astrology. This series of articles describes in detail those correspondences.

PISCES, NEPTUNE -- THE MOON, THE HANGED MAN

The Hanged Man is Card Number 12 in the Major Arcana. It is associated with the Astrological planet and symbolism of Neptune, metaphor of mystery, psychological complexity, spiritual enlightenment, self-sacrifice, hidden developments, secret doings, behind-the-scenes planning and chicanery, things unseen ... and insanity. It's a most uneasy mix, this strange, jumbled, bewildering energy.

In keeping with this complicated tone, the image on this card is one of the most odd and disturbing in the Tarot deck. For a long time I wasn't sure how to relate to it ... which again isn't surprising, since Neptune, its Astrological partner, deals in confusion, vagueness, profound emotions, and "feelings you really can't put into words." It's also interesting to me that this is the last article -- by a country mile -- that I have written in this series which may have nothing to do with the fact that it was "the only one left" ... in the end.
