There are 22 cards in the Major Arcana of the traditional Tarot deck ... and card correspondences for each of the 10 planets and 12 signs of traditional Astrology. This series of articles describes in detail those correspondences.
TAURUS, VENUS -- THE HIEROPHANT, THE EMPRESSThe Hierophant (sometimes called The High Priest or The Pope) is card number 5 in the Major Arcana. Its correspondence to Taurus energy is obvious when you consider that this card represents social convention, conforming to group rules and traditions, and maintaining the status quo. Like the energy of Taurus, this is not a card -- or concept -- that deals well with upsets, surprises, change, departures from the norm ... or anybody rocking the boat.
The imagery and symbolism of The Hierophant is that of the established church, orthodox religious doctrine, and the spiritual rules and regulations that moderate social behavior. It lays claim to being the word of God applied to secular matters. It definitely is not amused when its authority is questioned. In fact, there have been times in history when dissenting, innovative, and challenging thoughts and statements were life-and-death issues in some pretty horrifying ways.
