The Emperor Card in the Tarot

The Imperial Leader
Taking Charge of Your Life

The Emperor is card number 4 in the Major Arcana. It is the first Major Arcana card that correlates to an astrological sign, not a planet, and appropriately, that sign is Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac. The Emperor is quintessential male energy, the ultimate masculine archetype in all its power and glory.

The Emperor combines the strength, assets, experience, competence, authority, dimension, and wisdom of all four Kings of the Minor Arcana into one extraordinary, literally superhuman, expression of elemental force.

What The Emperor Card Means in a Layout

These are undoubtedly among some of the best "male" qualities we have in the stereotype of the species, and they are essential to maintaining a civilized way of life. This is also the energy The Emperor represents, in our best and most heroic legends, and in the Major Arcana of the Tarot.

When The Emperor appears in a reading, you are dealing with or being asked to access this wellspring of pure male potency that exists in you ... whatever your sex, age, or station in life. You are being advised to take charge, take action, show wisdom, and govern your life.

Means in a Layout

Failure or misuse of this energy is catastrophic. This is usually shown by The Emperor card in a reversed (upside down) position. Here the energy being described is overly conservative, weakened, abusive, tyrannical, and either self-serving or unable to assert legitimate self-interests. It may literally be unable to defend itself ... or it may be so forcefully out of control that cruelty and violence are possible. You are not governing your life or your conduct in some extremely essential ways

Aries and The Emperor
Your Place in the Major Arcana

If you are an Aries, your appropriate Major Arcana card is The Emperor, and its companion for the planetary ruler of your sign, Mars, is The Tower. (Oh, joy!!)

Most tarot decks show the Emperor as a commanding, authoritative, capable figure of government, worthy of the respect of those he leads and wise in his use of the power he wields. If you are an Aries, this figure is your mentor, the target of what you are aiming to become and understand. This archetype deals with the proper and beneficial uses of power.

The Good Leader
Meeting the Emperor in the Tarot

The Emperor is Key Number 4 in the Tarot's Major Arcana. It is associated with astrology sign Aries ... and with issues of authority, leadership and governance. There's a lot going on in The Emperor's world. He is more than a mere king ... he's a powerful sovereign with weighty and wide-ranging responsibilities. His actions and decisions matter to a lot of people, and, of course, the fate of his empire itself hangs on them.

The Emperor

I'm traveling through Thailand at the moment, in the process of bringing together the artwork and text for our own Lotus Tarot Deck and Book, which is very exciting. It wasn't an easy decision to make, to go off traveling on my own, but as The Emperor kept appearing in my readings, I knew I could make a success of it. So to continue our look at the Major Arcana, I thought I'd share some details about this very strong and dynamic card with you, and how to better interpret his appearance in your readings.

A tremendous number of people in America work very hard at something that bores them. Even a rich man thinks he has to go down to the office everyday. Not because he likes it but because he can't think of anything else to do.

Conjuring the Fool
In most Tarot decks, The Fool is colorful, attention-grabbing ... yet at the same time, a worrisome figure. He looks like someone you might cross the street to avoid, if you saw him coming toward you on the sidewalk ... or a ways off down the road.
