The History and Mystery of the Tarot

• Much of the early history of the Tarot remains unclear and is often controversial. Stories associated with the origins of the Tarot are often fanciful, romantic ... and wrong -- or at least unprovable. In my travels I've seen the usual references to gypsies ... which the Tarot's pop culture reputation certainly keeps alive. But I've also seen speculation about possible origins in ancient Egypt ... or in the help-me-keep-my-sanity project of a snowbound monk, trapped and alone in the Italian Alps.

• I've seen the occasional speculation that the Tarot was once the work of a priestess on the doomed continent of Atlantis, trying to preserve the spiritual beliefs, truths, knowledge and wisdoms of that mythical, mystical culture that has vanished -- if it ever existed at all -- from the face of the earth and plausible recorded history.

• And, of course, there are the tales that suggest the Tarot was brought back from the Orient by either Marco Polo or one of his Italian explorer clones along the Silk Road to China ... which did indeed host travelers carrying spices from that far-off exotic land back to Europe. The question is -- did that road also carry the Tarot or at least the idea for the Tarot from the East to Europe as well? As I said, the stories themselves are colorful -- and certainly add to the mystique of this intriguing occult tool. And maybe there's a grain of truth in several of them somewhere.

• The first known Tarot deck appeared in the 14th century. The oldest known book of Tarot cards still in existence dates back to 1840-42. Seventeen of these cards remain.

• The first complete tarot deck still in existence was probably painted by Bonifacio Bembo, an Italian artist, who created the work for the Duke of Milan. At that point, for certain, the Tarot stepped from the swirling mists of its shady past into the stream of contemporary (or at least comparatively contemporary) reality -- where, of course, it still lives today. • I, however, am willing to rejoice that the Tarot exists (meaning we don't still have to either invent it -- or do without it) -- however it came to be. And I'll add more to this article from time to time -- as the spirit moves me.
