The Lovers Card is associated with Gemini ... and despite its highly romantic and attractive title, The Lovers energy is about that more pedestrian passion of the Gemini spirit: Choices, alternatives, options, opposites. On its most generic and abstract level, The Lovers card describes the union of male and female energies to create "something new and different" ... the notion of gestalt in action, a thing greater than the sum of its parts.

Most Tarot decks show The Lovers as a man and woman, naked like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. In many of the contemporary Tarots these two are embracing ... or at least they seem to know each other. In the Waite deck and its many variations, these two figures aren't even looking at each other ... and I would hardly call their expressions joyful ... or welcoming.
