Uses of the Tarot

• As a stimulus for synchronicity ... a practice which historically has shown an eerie ability to forecast the development of coming events. In other words, "fortune-telling" ... perhaps the most commonly known use of the Tarot, although its various and checkered reputations as something magical, unworldly, or "evil" are overblown and should be cautiously understood with exactly that fact in mind. The Tarot "works" in this regard for exactly the same reasons omens, synchronicities, and coincidences do.

• A tool for spiritual development, insight and meditation. A Tarot reading is often a solitary ritual performed by someone for his or her own information, enlightenment, aid, or benefit.

• A tool for reflection and self-understanding, often used in journaling work, guided visualizations, etc.

• A tool for counseling and advice. A Tarot reading can be a multi-person experience when a reader reads cards for someone else who has requested its wisdom and guidance.

• A tool useful in the practice of magick ... the "real deal" ... not the stage-tricks or other showmanship illusions. In this, the Tarot really does assume "magical" dimensions ... in ways that can help banish negativity, achieve goals, answer prayers, bring about personal transformation and improvements, organize and induce change in the environment, and even work spells ... for healing, safety, good fortune, gifts, and arranging fortuitous meetings and discoveries.

• For enjoyment as works of art.

• Games ... including tarock, which may derive from the original purpose of the Tarot cards themselves. Thus Tarot can stimulate conversation, diversion, recreation, amusement, and greater social intimacy.
