• The fairy tales we hear as children -- and then, in turn, read to our own children -- suggest that "living happily ever after" is the whole point of living. I have come to believe, however, that the end goal of life is not happiness, but experience. Happiness is one experience. Pain is another. And perhaps in time I'll change my mind on this important point again.

• You don't always have to be happy. Sometimes it's enough to just be ok, to know you'll get through the pain of the moment ... and be happy again somewhere on the other side.

Coping with change

You may deal with the process of internal change over the next several days ... which, of course, is where the greatest changes always occur. You may also continue to experience the fallout or repercussions from some recent, substantial, external change whose ripples and adjustments are still causing shudders in other areas of your life now ... and in you as well, particularly with regard to your partnerships, relationships, and personal associations.

You may be changing. Someone else may be changing. Or the situation you are having to respond to is in the process of becoming something else. Adaptation and the ability to roll with the punches are the qualities you'll need to rely on now, until things stabilize again.

An extra piece of advice:

You can never change "just one little thing" ... not about yourself, your life, your relationships, your work ... or anything else. Whether it's a change for the better or for the worse ... the change itself will change other things. Just as no man is an island, no event in the real world occurs in a vacuum.

None of us knows what the next change is going to be, what unexpected opportunity is just around the corner, waiting a few months or a few years to change all the tenor of our lives.

Today's Theme for Money and Practical Concerns
Failing to find happiness

Expect to reach a point soon where you really have to admit -- at least to yourself -- that you haven't "made it yet" in terms of happiness, satisfaction, or fulfillment. You can spend some time muddling around in that state if you like. Or you can look at what you need to do differently, now that you a bit wiser for recent experience, and get started.

You may also have to abandon something you once counted on to help you find happiness -- a situation, a relationship, a creative project, an idea. Holding on to this in hopes of "making it perform" as intended ... is a futile exercise, and doing that only keeps a much more suitable replacement from finding a space in your life.

An additional thought to ponder:

Knowing you have to start over again with regard to "finding your bliss" isn't a wonderful message, but what's your alternative? To continue doing without?
