The Readers' Circle
Tarot for Real Life

There has been some mighty good material languishing in the depths of my computer for several years ... archives from a list I used to moderate ... and projects I've been toying with from time to time that have never had a real "home" ... or a clear place to reside on the site -- until now. I think I've finally seen what I want to do with them ... and The Readers' Circle is my answer -- for a while, at least.
Some of this new material will be suitable for the motivated beginner. Much of it is aimed at the more intermediate and advanced reader ... readers who already know the meanings and energies of the cards ... and who can take the ideas I'll publish and do their own creative and experimental work with the concept.
In that way, The Readers' Circle will branch out and show you more things to do with your Tarot cards than just "do readings." There is some extraordinarily fine work being done these days with this marvelous occult tool ... and in The Readers' Circle I'll add some of my own creative directions to the rich mixture.

Interpreting Tarot

Why learn the Tarot? It's a fair question. But there can be several reasons why people ask me this. They wonder why someone who looks and sounds as sane and sensible as I do in "real life" would spend time learning (and teaching and advising and making money from) something which sounds so foolish, frivolous, and illogical on the surface -- or as far as their often very limited information goes.
As sincerely and simply as I can, I answer these people, "Because I have learned the Tarot works when you know what you're doing and that it has value for me."
Sometimes I still get a smirk and a shake of the head from the other person ... who has just added another piece of evidence to his belief that crazy people come in all guises. But I get that reaction a lot less often than I used to. I think this is a good thing. Maybe it means that people in general are more tolerant of new ideas and more open to at least looking at something different before writing it off.

A Magical Course in Tarot: Reading the Cards in a Whole New Way
By
Michele Morgan, Rebecca Richards
As a student ... and as a novice reader, this phenomenon was the most puzzling, discouraging and infuriating part of the process for me to deal with. It does happen this way sometimes ... and only through keeping written records of my own questions and experiences through the years -- along with the Tarot's responses, even at their most obscure and baffling was I able to see the pattern of what seems to be happening here.
So, what's going on when a Tarot reading seems to miss the mark, or worse, not address the question at all. What's the "message" when you ask about money ... and the reading comes back full of cups or Major Arcana, and none of the cards address wealth and finances?

When a Tarot Reading Needs
A Little Bit More
A clarification card offers "one last little bit" of information about the overall theme and direction of a reading. It is used to focus, condense, and solidify the direction of information that might otherwise be ambiguous, confusing, or open to more than one interpretation.

Mary K. Greer's 21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card
By

Let me start by saying that I'm a great believer in journals and written notes. I recommend applications using them in almost all my teaching on tarot reading and other subjects, including keeping lists, doing dialogues, brainstorming on paper, flow-writing intervals and other specific exercises.
With that bias in mind, be advised I will suggest at the end of this article on doing one card daily Tarot readings that you keep at least a temporary collection of notes as part of the work you do in this experience in order to gain the most possible from your efforts in learning to read the Tarot. This will help to both keep track of your results and to educate you in the principles of Tarot reading being used and accessed here.

Learning Tarot Spreads

Perhaps there are unlimited options for assigning meanings to card positions when designing your own layouts, either for general use or in specific situations, but there are certainly a number of standards you can apply -- depending on exactly what kind of information you want. There are, in fact, a lot of things to consider.

Thoughts on Designing Your Own Layouts

A List of Possibilities
Here is a list -- extensive but certainly not exhaustive of common place designations you may want to consider when doing a reading or designing a spread.
A List of Possibilities

Points to Consider
When Dealing with a Layout
Ask yourself when looking at a layout ... is there a predominance of one (or two) suits in the reading? Is there a suit that is not represented at all? Are the cards in a suit strong ... or are they all blocked and corrupted? Do you have a lot of low numerical cards, a majority of "middle" numbers, a lot of high numbers ... or possibly "two ends of the spectrum" represented?

Treat the Tarot as a Game ...
A Bridge to the Quiet Wisdom
of Your Inner World
Treat the Tarot as a game, a piece of parlor magic nonsense, or something slightly weird "for entertainment only" ... and you'll get back pretty much what you put into the effort to use it. Some meaningless one-line-sentences ... some gibberish and a bunch of nonsense. Ask it silly questions, and you'll get back less than that. Garbage in, garbage out. No surprise there.
But, think of the Tarot as an instrument, a tool, a device to help you unlock and examine the contents of your own mind, your subconscious wisdom and your psychic sense, and you have set the stage for something wondrous. Respect it. Take it seriously. Befriend it ... and it will return you dividends on that investment, too. In kind.
