How to Work with a Difficult Reading
Turning the Wheel of Life's Possibilities

By difficult, I mean unhappy, full of challenging cards, clearly showing a picture you didn't want to see and don't want to have to live through. The kind of reading where you're oh-so-tempted to decide the cards just slipped a cog and handed you a squishy mess instead of the bright, polished apple you wanted. The kind of reading where you want a do-over, like you used to call for when you were a kid and your roll of the dice wasn't good at all. If you could talk your fellow players into letting you try again ... you at least got a second shot for a better deal from your effort.

Tarot cards can feel a lot like that when it's just you and them talking silently in the still of the night. They hand you back a miserable picture in response to your sincerely posed question ... and you'd really like to pretend this reading didn't happen, doesn't count, qualifies as a do-over ... and lay out cards again, concentrating harder next time on some ray of hope that your first attempt squashed completely.

Life, though, doesn't work like that. Trying to fool yourself into thinking things are better than they are ... may keep you from trying to fix stuff you could influence, things that truly might help you forge a happier ending, or at least an imitation silk purse from the sow's ear of raw materials you've been handed.

The idea for this technique, this article, came to me by accident ... and we all know about accidents. There ain't no such thing.

I was just monkeying around with the cards, playing with a layout technique other readers sometimes use where you rotate the cards in your reading into different positions to get a changing view of your situation ... an exercise in looking at the same picture from different angles, really -- so that it becomes dynamic, alive, multi-dimensional instead of the static cut-and-dried ... "This is how it is, now live with it" answer that is often the superficial response we accept -- dismal though it may be -- and carry on.

Now, I'll also admit I may be a little late to the party with some of the ideas I'm going to discuss, but the truth is I didn't have them as part of my working knowledge before this exercise ... and maybe you don't either ... or maybe you need to be reminded in case you had this once and lost it ... so if all this is so elementary you can't believe I was so naïve -- and I look like an idiot talking about this with such delight, well, so be it. It won't be the first time I've gone public with my Homer Simpson moments ... and I'm reasonably certain it won't be the last.

Anyway, the reading that came up ... not in response to any real question, but just in the cards I put down to maneuver, manipulate, and rotate ... was the one you see below in a very elementary layout pattern. Nothing sophisticated. Nothing tricky. Nothing that was supposed to be surprising.
