There are 22 cards in the Major Arcana of the traditional Tarot deck ... and card correspondences for each of the 10 planets and 12 signs of traditional Astrology. This series of articles, to be written over the next year, will describe in detail those correspondences.

Sagittarius, Temperance -- Jupiter, The Wheel of Fortune

Temperance in the Tarot is Card Number 14 in the Major Arcana ... the card following the Death card in the numerical progression. This itself is an interesting comment on what follows "death" in the occult world: Temperance ... with its connotations of moderation, restraint, self-control, and equilibrium.

Interesting, too, perhaps that in both the astrological sequence of signs and the Major Arcana of the Tarot, Death and Scorpio fall much closer to the middle of the progression than to the end. There is, in fact, so much more to come after "death" ... in both these revered occult disciplines. After the awesome changes wrought by Scorpio ... comes the exuberance and dynamism of Sagittarius. After Death in the Tarot ... comes Temperance.

Certainly this brings up images of limbo, and rest, and catching one's breath after a time of stress and change. There may be plenty of justification for that. This place of peace and restored balance "after death" is part of the mythology of the death experience and the afterlife in most major religions. (And the first Tarot reading I ever saw that forecast physical death, ended not with the Death card ... but with Temperance.)

Temperance is, indeed, the Major Arcana card associated with Sagittarius ... and at first blush it seems a strange pairing. The angel with one foot on land and one in the water, pouring two vessels of liquid into one another doesn't really call to mind the bounding energy of the centaur Sagittarius. Sagittarius energy itself is almost synonymous with immoderation and going to extremes. Again, it seems an odd choice to become one with the Temperance card.
