With a Little Help from Grace
It's the 18th century. Slave running is a booming industry for England. British ships embark on a three-legged journey loaded with trinkets, liquor, weapons and cloth. First stop, Africa. The goods are traded for the "treasures" of African tribal chiefs: native men and women captured in wars against other tribes.
Like canned sardines, the "human cargo" is packed into the bowels of ships headed to the New World. Arriving in the Americas, slaves are exchanged for sugar and molasses. Completing the voyage, ships return to England with ingredients destined to be made into rum.

5 Steps to Being Selfish
When I was growing up, if my mother called me selfish, I knew she was extremely disappointed. I was the 5th out of 6 kids with 5 of us being born within 6 years, so my mother was busy. I remember being at a school function in the winter and all of us threw our coats at my mom. Appearances were very important to her so she put on a happy face, but the pile of coats couldn't hide the misery in her eyes.
Mind you I was only in 2nd grade but I remember telling my mom that I didn't want to ever have children. Her response shocked me for two reasons; One that she didn't object to my observation and two, it marked my first encounter with the "s" word. She stated that I was selfish!
Many times over my childhood that word was uttered in response to a situation where I wanted to take care of myself. So, as I grew up, married and had children I believed my days of placing myself on the top of the totem pole ended with the utterance of "I do".

Attitudes of Gratitude: How to Give and Receive Joy Everyday of Your Life

2009 was a horrible year for a lot of people I know. Me included. I don't recall it starting out to be a train wreck, but here at the end, in very cruel ways, it was. So much that I was careful not to wish too many folks, "Happy New Year" as 2010 slipped quietly into place.
The best I could do was to tell them sincerely, "I hope the new year will be better." And we agreed that would be nice -- for all of us. Some of the losses we were both trying to console each other for and avoid mentioning out loud have simply been too awful to process in the short time since they happened.

Mindful Driving
Is drive-time a hassle for you? Are you usually in a hurry, hustled along by the fear (or certain knowledge) that you're going to be late to wherever you're going ... and once again, a very public and essential-feeling part of your life is out of control. Surprising, isn't it how something so small, so simple, can leave you tied up in knots and wrung-out emotionally before you even start your day, get to work, or find a parking place to keep the appointment that is the great big deal in your world for whatever reason.

So How's Life Where YOU Live?
Where you're not so much interested in "home on the range" as whether or not your home HAS a range. This piece started out ironic and tongue-in-cheek (although every word is true) ... and gradually segued into something sentimental. This state does that to me. I wouldn't live anywhere else.

The Tyranny of "What If ..."
A number of years ago I had a client who came to me in a really bad stressed out condition. He came for one session, and then the next thing I knew I was told he had had a nervous breakdown.
When I visited him in the hospital, I was quite surprised to see that his face had a certain radiance to it. I asked how he was doing, half expecting to hear a litany of bad news.

I'm glad I live in a place where the seasons change gently ... and yet are still seasons with a distinct character, each to itself. Spring melts gracefully into the long days of Summer, resplendent in green leaves and golden sunshine, and at day's end, each sunset is a unique painting straight from the hand of God.
Summer folds eventually into yellow, brown and russet Autumn. Days grow shorter; evenings are crisp. Frost decorates the rocks and railings where we live in the grayness of each new dawn. And in Winter, new snow sparkles in the freezing cold, beautiful while it lasts, marked as the days pass by the tracks of passing animals we rarely ever see.
