The Cancer Character

Cancer is the fourth sign of the Zodiac. It follows Gemini in the Zodiacal line-up. As a rule, the range of Cancer covers the time from June 22nd until July 22nd. It is a time of devotion to private life matters, connecting with one's family and domestic concerns, tending to one's physical dwelling, and giving attention to one's feelings and inner world.

It is associated with mothering, protection, support, encouragement, intuition, and emotions. In mundane matters, Cancer is connected with the circumstances of your home life and family circle, your heritage, your involvement with mothering and protecting those you love, your psychological security, your foundations, and the end of life.

Cancer is the "nest builder" who provides security, establishes a safe environment, offers emotional support, and maintains lasting structures for the sake of family members. Cancer wants to be sure you can always go home again and that you always have a home to go to!

Cancer is devoted to the maintenance and welfare of those it considers "members of the family." It is sensitive to its surroundings, responsive to disruptions -- and serenity -- in the environment, and often buffeted about by its own moods and feelings.

It is concerned with the past, with "family history," heritage, ancestry, sentiment, and memories. It has a strong appreciation for traditions and the continuity they provide. It is one of the most perceptive and caring of the signs, knowing immediately how to give the right kind of empathy and attention to those who need its special brand of kindness.

The Zodiacal symbol for Cancer is the Crab. Cancer is the Cardinal Water sign. Water signs are emotional, intuitive, sensitive, and responsive. Cardinal signs are proactive and initiating. They deal with life's problems by taking action to change circumstances ... and create new conditions. The other Cardinal Signs are Aries, Capricorn, and Libra. The other Water signs are Scorpio and Pisces.

Traditionally Cancer is compatible with Scorpio and Pisces, other Cancers, Taurus, and Virgo. On the other hand, a match between Cancer and Aries or Cancer and Libra carries special challenges ... and a relationship between Cancer and Capricorn will require well-defined "territories" for each ... and a constant willingness to compromise on many issues, for these two signs often hold to different values.

Physically, Cancer rules the stomach and digestive system. The ruling planet of Cancer is the Moon. Cancer is associated with the color silver. The starstone (not the birthstone) assigned to Cancer is the pearl.
