Venus in Capricorn

Venus (the planetary metaphor that describes relationship concerns and financial interests) moved into Capricorn just before midnight on the West coast ... around 2:30 in the morning on the East Coast. With Venus in Capricorn, people tend to be cautious, conservative, prudent, and practical in their relationships.

They emphasize qualities such as ... content deleted ... This material and contemporary forecasts are available by subscription in our Premium Members site. Join our Astrology and Tarot Premium Membership today!!

In other news: The Moon is comfortably settled in Taurus today. This offers a mood that is calm, placid, and self-indulgent. With the Moon in TaurusYour main interests today will center on taking life easy, following established plans, not over-exerting yourself, not rocking the boat, and not even breaking a sweat if you can possibly help it. You're in no mood for surprises ... or producing anything spectacular. You want a day that's peaceful, quiet, and "nice." The The Void of Course Moon early this evening. (7:22 PM EST; 4:22 PM PST) So ... sure. Plan on kicking back and doing nothing ... a little while longer.

Pamper yourself with some rich holiday goodies, left over from yesterday. Play some quiet music or curl up with a good book tonight. Maybe a long, decadent "Hollywood shower" later would be nice. Or an hour long soak in a warm bath full of fragrant somethings ... and candles everywhere. Better yet, if you can arrange it, would be a massage. Moon in Taurus energy is so fixated on physical sensations, after all. It seems a shame not to cooperate!

Mars in Pisces Trines Jupiter in Cancer
Late December 2001 through Early January 2002

On Monday afternoon, Mars in Pisces trines Jupiter in Cancer. This, is a wonderful energy to have operating for the holiday season and may help mitigate some of the terrible stress from the t-square configuration Mars in Pisces now forms with the Saturn in Gemini opposition to Pluto in Sagittarius.

Trines represent moments of easy flow, stress-free living, "being in the right place at the right time," "things just falling into place." Mars in Pisces represents action that is unobtrusive, self-sacrificing, modest, and compassionate. Jupiter in Cancer represents philosophy, benevolence, and charitable attitudes that are generous, family-oriented, sensitive, and sentimental. It's a holiday spirit aspect if ever I saw one.

Oppositions ... indicate projected energy and relationship problems. When dealing with oppositions, "other people" are the ones causing our problems ... because we often fail to recognize the energy they're expressing back at us that is really our own attitude disguised and disowned. If you were to ask your antagonists ... and trust they to give you an honest answer, they'd say you're the one with the problem. Because you're playing the same game of reflecting their disowned energy back to them.

Projections are complex and extremely confusing to those participants in the games this pattern depicts. The people onstage are locked into a narrow position, unable or unwilling to see the other side of the conflict as having anything to do with them whatsoever. As they see it, their enemy is the whole problem. Period. It's the dispassionate observers who are best able to see the dynamics of an opposition that consists of two "sides" of a disagreement accusing the other of the very qualities, shortcomings, and "sins" they themselves show in much greater degree.

Even without trying, the work you do now, and the ideas you entertain most earnestly will carry these colors and qualities. At its core, this is the energy of the humanitarian entrepreneur. It might be fun to see what you can make of it.

Finally: The Moon goes into Aries at 1:45 PM (EST) Saturday afternoon (10:45 AM PST). Until then it is The Void of Course Moon itself in Pisces. It will be in Aries until near the start of Christmas day. Which side of midnight depends on where you are in the country -- or the world. Venus in Sagittarius Sextile to Uranus in Aquarius
December 19 - 26 2001

The square between Venus in Scorpio and Uranus in Aquarius that I mentioned back at the end of November has now become a sextile between Venus in Sagittarius ... and Uranus in Aquarius. Sextiles represent moments of opportunity and insight, moments when the energy of both the planets can be put to beneficial use, stimulated by the assets and qualities of one another. This is a much better energy to have following us into the Christmas season than some of the combinations I've written about recently.

Both of these are buoyant, cerebral, energetic, companionable signs. As I said, this is a much better energy for passing Christmas with a smile.

In other news: With so much of the sky still in Sagittarius, the square energy experienced by the Moon in Pisces ... presently beginning its transit of that sign may have you still feeling pretty frayed and overwhelmed over for the next few days. Last minute arrangements and obligations, perhaps. But as the Sun joins Mercury in steady, grounded Capricorn ... and Venus hurries along, too, in the wee hours of Christmas night, you'll find your center of gravity again. Ho, ho, ho!!

Venus in Sagittarius opposing Saturn in Gemini
December 10 - December 15

Late on Monday ... 9:33 PM EST, 6:33 PM PST ... Venus in Sagittarius opposed Saturn in Gemini. From now until after the New Moon in Sagittarius on Friday afternoon ... 3:47 PM EST, 12:47 PM PST ... we will be coping with this stern, cold, unresponsive, sadly unloving energy as part of the fabric of our world. Oppositions deal with relationship issues, with all their complex projected energy.

When coping with projections, we can be absolutely convinced that "other people" are causing our problems ... and often have plenty of examples to point to in our argument.

Projected energy is disowned energy. Habits, responses, attitudes, and behavior you have repressed, bottled up, neglected, cut off, or failed to accept as part of your conscious personality come back to you in the mirror of your experiences in the outside world.

They get your attention by making you uncomfortable, and like the orphaned and abandoned spiritual children that they are, these essential fragments of you ask for acceptance back into the center of yourself ... which is, after all, their source, the place they ultimately belong.

Venus opposing Saturn is an especially poignant one. Venus is the metaphor for relationships, love, your connections to other people, your abstract values, and your dealings with money.

It gives information about the way you use your social and diplomatic skills, the way you participate in partnerships, the kind of partners you seek, the kind of love you want to share (and receive!!), and the way you work to make your associations pleasant, cooperative, and productive -- in short, the way you support yourself with people, money, and other resources.

When Venus is well-supported, in your Natal Chart or in the sky, you can both give and get what you want in these highly important areas of life -- often without a lot of strain. Venus is not into much "heavy-lifting" as a rule. It represents the part of you that wants to be passive and look pretty, to attract what it needs with some well-placed come-hither glances and save the heaving, energy-consuming expressions of love for the aspects of Mars to handle.

Venus afflicted resorts to the usual tantrums, wheedling, and whining of an unhappy lover. It becomes fussy, helpless, codependent, chronically "lonely" and unhappy. On the one hand, it feels chronically unappreciated, inadequate, and incomplete without a significant other to round out its life.

On the other hand, it becomes manipulative, complaining, exploitive, and enmeshed, prompting you to lose track of where you begin and someone else leaves off. To get its needs met, it will use other people ... and simultaneously turn itself into a victim and a doormat. It's a sticky, exasperating energy for all concerned.

An affliction from Saturn is one of the most serious problems soft, convivial, companionable Venus energy can face. What, after all, could be more heart-rending than a lover without a beloved, a lover whose love is unrequited, a lover whose target neither knows nor cares what it wants ... because the target has other business to take care of first ... and always? The priorities of love are way, way, way down on Saturn's list. They don't even make the first three pages of carefully segregated and columnized items.

Saturn's energy is all-business, conservative, restrained, and cautious. In your personality, it is concerned with crafting your public image, your professional reputation, your career achievements, the things you want to be remembered for by the world at large. Saturn believes in hard work, minding tradition, respecting authority, and paying your dues. Love is for those with no ambition and wads of time to waste ... as far as it is concerned.

It, too, obviously has an important part to play in a productive, fulfilling life, but the softer concerns of love (and Venus) get mighty short shrift, even under the best of conditions. Positive, supportive aspects between Saturn and Venus view a relationship ... and especially marriage as an alliance, a team-effort, a business arrangement, a durable, lasting contract between associates whose assigned roles have been defined for centuries.

It has no use for any frivolity or deviation. Status is involved, after all. And usually money. Romantic alliances have a very politicized, even commercial, tone ... because Saturn wants to know what it can count on in terms of assets and cooperation when the going gets tough -- and for Saturn's interests "tough times" are always right there in the middle of the landscape.

Afflicted, Saturn energy is remote, aloof, critical, frigid, judgmental, inflexible, overly-controlled, and unforgiving. It is a harsh, merciless miser when doling out "resources" ... which can be anything from failing to supply enough money to live on to delivering a kick in the face and a critical snarl with a lot implied about survival of the fittest, tightening your belt, and being worth what you're paid. If this sounds vastly unloving ... Saturn's reply is, "Well, life is tough."

Venus in Sagittarius afflicted by Saturn in Gemini ... which is what's happening now ... wants connection with philosophically compatible partners, to share new information and knowledge, to celebrate the wonder of different points of view. Saturn in Gemini's response ... among other things ... is to pick the offering apart, bit by microscopic bit, reducing a work of art to fractured fragments, and then declaring that it just wasn't interesting, complex, or complete enough.

Its reasons can be dismissive and superficial. It may be shockingly short on real facts for its critical opinions ... but rely instead on fast arguments, weasel words, and an unbending insistence on rules, history, and "conventional wisdom" to make its case.

Efforts to find compromises, partnerships, greater ethical wisdom, and to forge a higher, more serviceable world view may be impeded by bigotry, concern for "status and the letter of the law," red tape, and a reluctance to implement new ideas or share information that hasn't been examined and approved at six different levels of authority.

This is a very rigid, hateful, vindictive, callous, self-justifying energy ... with governmental (Saturn) and religious (Sagittarius) components lined up against each other in a staring contest where nobody's inclined to budge ... or blink. For now.

Invitations to "a wider debate" on issues that may possibly need assessment are met by cliches and declarations that "old fashioned ideas" can handle the problem. Trouble is ... "old fashioned" ideas may take their cue from such time-honored traditions as the Spanish Inquisition -- a feature tailor-made to describe this aspect and these signs. In addition to feeling that you are cut-off, unloved, unappreciated, and unvalued ... add the feeling that your principles don't matter and your arguments are dismissed by "authority" without a fair hearing.

"Lonely" could be one of the milder reactions to such treatment ... when you think about it.

An extra piece of information:

Venus - Saturn oppositions are a dynamic in which the desire for love, acceptance, comfort, companionship, and pleasure are blocked by the "other person's" priorities, obligations, professional concerns, commitments, responsibilities, and the need to tend to business and establish long-term structures for the future.

Try to see how you are also playing into this pattern. It doesn't necessary have to involve a deliberate lack of caring on anyone's part. Partners (and you) just have "other things they simply must take care of first" ... and love's tender gestures wind up being a casualty -- anyway.

In other news: We've moved into the Dark of the Moon for this lunation cycle. For the next few days, life's natural energy levels are at their lowest ebb in preparation for a time of new initiatives and new beginnings starting with the New Moon in Sagittarius on Friday afternoon (3:47 PM EST, 12:47 PM PST) This is a time astrologers call "The Dark of the Moon" ... which is conducive to bringing matters to a close, tying up loose ends, resting, planning, being quiet and reflective, recuperating, tending to "housekeeping chores" in all areas of your life, and generally mellowing out as the energy prepares for a new upswing.

For the next couple of days, don't start anything new. For sure don't start anything important. It will not come to fruition. Wait for the better, more positive changes in outlook and opportunities that will arrive about Tuesday of next week and unfold on their own schedule.

Mars moved into Pisces early Saturday morning. It will remain there until January 18, 2002. The positive energy of this position certainly is appropriate to the holiday season. Unfortunately in the time right around Christmas itself, Mars will have moved into a T-square configuration with the already difficult Saturn / Pluto opposition. Given that Mars / Saturn squares are notoriously frustrating, often producing (and indicating!) great resentment, that Mars / Pluto squares are physically hazardous and dangerous, and that afflicted Mars in Pisces is known to be "sneaky and underhanded," this does not bode well at all for a peaceful, trouble-free Christmas season.

Many of the less attractive qualities of Mars may be much in evidence during a good part of its travels though this sign this year. The advice from here is: don't let your imagination run away with you regarding "what might happen," but do be extremely cautious and err, if at all, on the side of safety.

Sun / Mercury / Pluto in Sagittarius
Opposing Saturn in Gemini

Both Mercury in Sagittarius (conscious mind and communication) and Sun in Sagittarius (ego and self-identity) conjuncted Pluto in Sagittarius (transformation and permanent change) yesterday.

This sets the stage for a new level of growth and awareness in your religious principles, your ethical foundations, the "rules you live by," and your overall philosophy of life. But, with the opposition to Saturn in Gemini still in effect, this work may have to struggle against overly conservative teachings from the past, deeply rooted ideas that have the power of "authority" to back them up, and a deep resistance to change -- because so much information of a fundamental nature is being challenged now.

This may come about through encountering "other people" whose opinions are inflexible, reactionary, and "set in their ways" or people whose radical new notions challenge your sacred cows and perceptions. This is, as I've said, a very forceful, difficult aspect ... which doesn't happen very often. Thank heaven! The last time something similar to yesterday's configuration came around was in September, 1965.

The changes in thinking wrought by the mid 1960's still reverberate in the memories of those of us who lived through that time. (I was in college then. Right in the thick of it. Vietnam. Protests against Vietnam. LBJ. Women's Lib was in its infancy. As the song says ... "Wasn't that a time?")

The world is lining up to go through something similar ... and just as revolutionary. And it may take some time and distance before we can look back and see the changes happening now ... the way they were happening then.

Hang on. This ain't over yet.

An extra piece of information:

The last time this pattern came around ... the one in the mid '60's, the clash was over differing concepts of "ideals" and "duty." Pisces and Virgo's polarity. This played out most obviously in the contrast between the "flower children" mentality versus the "service to your country" crowd.

This time, with the signs of Gemini and Sagittarius involved, the tension falls directly across the kind of "information" one uses to conduct his life and the "religious principles and laws" that structure social ideology. We are, of course, seeing this strife on the Nightly News each evening ... but the changes are affecting us each individually as well. Do bear that in mind.

December 4, 2001

Both Mercury (conscious thought and communication skills) and the Sun (ego and self-identity issues), now conjunct in Sagittarius, are opposing Saturn in Gemini for the next week.

Oppositions (as you might imagine -- and as the label certainly implies) are stressful aspects of blockage and frustration ... usually involving relationships and "other people". Sun / Mercury in Sagittarius focuses your attention on your publicly revealed knowledge and expertise, your professional preparation, your "rules for living," and the philosophical and ethical principles that govern your behavior.

The opposition from Saturn (when stressed, indicating inflexibility, rigidity, insensitivity, and "sticking to the letter of the law") implies a time when your exuberant and enthusiastic involvement with new ideas and more liberated religious principles runs hard into conservative thinking, "red tape," traditional rules and regulations, and even codified laws put together by "other people" who have no interest at all in upsetting their solid, comfortable status quo to accommodate you.

You may find "other people" especially unresponsive to your ideas and ego needs, more concerned with maintaining structure and appearances than with any actual search for "truth," and unyielding in their application of a "rules is rules" mentality ... without regard to the spirit behind the regulation ... let alone any concern for "fairness."

You may spend time over the next week feeling judged, unappreciated, criticized, even condemned by people with enough power to make you listen to them ... and no sympathy for your position whatsoever. It will be a hard week to get people to listen to what you have to say ... let alone take the time to understand and find a decent compromise in areas of dissent.

This configuration leaves you feeling cut off, mistreated, "unheard," and forced to accommodate someone else's structures and needs ... whose message may be delivered with a cold insistence that you have to think and act in certain ways in order to find acceptance, let alone respect.

It can obviously be a touchy and frustrating time ... and keeping a low profile, if possible, is not a bad idea. Also ... if you can postpone any kind of extensive project that deals with law, communications, contracts, agreements, academia, government, large institutions, education, or ethical questions ... you would be advised to do so.

Putting this energy into the inception of such an enterprise puts it in the Natal Chart of the matter, and leaves you battling this uphill arrangement every step of the way. It can even doom your project to failure from the beginning ... especially if authority figures, legal restrictions, or "someone else" needs to cooperate or give permission on important points for you to ultimately succeed.

In other news:

Venus has joined the Sun / Mercury / Pluto party in Sagittarius and will remain there until the early morning hours of Dec 26.

When Venus is in Sagittarius, people tend to be candid, sincere, and extraordinarily fun-loving in their relationships. They emphasize fairness, sincerity, benevolence, honesty, and a certain "moral tone" in the methods they use to attract love and conduct the partnerships in their lives.

They seek associations with people who share their philosophical and ethical principles, people whose knowledge and perspectives fit with and expand their own, and people whose rules for living are agreeable to theirs.

They may also stress qualities like optimism and sincerity in sharing their vision of love and partnership with their significant others. They believe in the power of love and the concept of "forever and ever" . . . and want to see these potentials express themselves fully.

With Venus in Sagittarius, people are unusually broad-minded, freedom-loving, and interested in relationships that promise an expanded vision of love's potentials and a sense of "far horizons and greener pastures" to explore. In other words, they may be seeking a greater sense of novelty and adventure - and more prepared to entertain foreign ideas and new notions about close relationships than at other times.

They may be more tolerant of cross-cultural partnerships ... and drawn into associations with people whose backgrounds differ markedly from their own. They are also more likely to spend money on travel and / or educational opportunities.

Under stress, however, a rather ugly pretentiousness and hypocrisy permeates the conduct of relationships. There may be a counterproductive dogmatism regarding "rules" and "religious standards," philosophical points, and ideas on the conduct of "a moral life." Wanderlust and insincerity work to undermine partnerships. And the potential for overly-optimistic commitments and broken promises is extraordinarily high.

Expect much of Venus' time in Sagittarius this year to emphasize exactly those more "unattractive" qualities in the conduct of partners and relationships ... because the stresses from Saturn (with its "do as I say because I'm in charge here!!" attitude) and its fondness for applying rigid rules, just because they've been written down somewhere, is extreme now.
