Mars in Cancer
May 28 - July 13, 2002
As of early yesterday morning, Mars has moved into Cancer where it will remain for the next six weeks ... until July 13. With Mars in Cancer, people focus on actions and favor ambitions that are strongly colored by emotional considerations, and their concern for issues involving security and protection becomes both passionate and touchy.
Despite this, they use prefer actions that are indirect, unobtrusive, quiet, and far more passive than open. Responses to this energy ... and its interests ... may be based largely on intuitive feelings -- and take place quietly, but in ways designed to protect home, family, and other personal affairs. They may carry a definite flavor of confidentiality ... or "keeping matters within the family circle."
People may, therefore, be very focused on activities that involve their private lives, family members, home circumstances, emotional roots, and be concerned with tradition, history, and experiences of "the past." This energy is known for being clannish, sentimental, family oriented, and nostalgic. There is also a marked emphasis on safety, nurturing, and emotional connection with loved ones.
Action based on moods and emotions is prominent. This energy is very supportive of behavior that is sensitive, compassionate, and caring. There is further accent on being tender, responsive, and in touch with your feelings and psychological concerns. This is a very "mothering" energy, and people will both feel and show this kind of attitude and attachment.
Under stress, behavior and responses become moody, emotionally unbalanced, resentful, complaining, blaming, fearful, and compulsive. When it comes to going after what they want, people can be obsessive, anxious, paranoid, overwrought, and irritable. In extreme cases, they are unstable to the point of hysteria.

Saturn in Gemini Opposing Pluto in Sagittarius
The final exact contact between these two huge karmic giants has just occurred. Saturn in Gemini has opposed retrograde Pluto in Sagittarius at approximately 17° of their respective signs.
Abstractly, this represents solid ideas, entrenched thinking, formal and organized beliefs, traditional opinions, and long-standing knowledge or prejudices accepted as conventional wisdom or unshakable truth being blown apart and reformed by radical, revolutionary new ways of thinking, explosive new philosophical views, new "rules for living" that are nothing short of "dynamite." A new world view is being born ... and the ripples will shudder through life as we know it for the rest of this year and well into next.
Given the two signs in question, these events, as they unfold, may involve legal, religious, ethical, and philosophical differences based on greater knowledge, volatile disclosures, radical judgments ... and the absolute refusal to accept shallow, standard answers or excuses any longer. Given the planetary metaphors ... deep-rooted fixtures such as government, the legal system, traditional religious institutions, and corporate businesses may be involved in the shake-up -- forced into change by something that amounts to revolution ... literal as well as metaphorical.
The next year ... and some time beyond as well ... is going to be an interesting one. It's fair to say "business as usual" ... will not continue as we know it. The times they are again a'changin' ... and uncomfortable as it may be in the interim, when the dust settles and the smoke clears -- things will be better. Improvements will exist that wouldn't have been possible without the trauma of the problems that will cause them. And a better "working philosophy" on which to conduct your life will have been set in place of the one that got booted so unceremoniously.
The stage for this is finally set ... and those of us with planetary placements around 17° of any sign will find our lives changed radically as well -- for the better, but again, not in ways that are reasonably considered "comfortable."
To briefly outline the structures of this change as best I can again in general terms:
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Aries -- especially if near 17°: This drama will play out very directly as I just described. Something you believe, some significant structure of ideas on which you have based a lot of your past thinking is about to be challenged "fatally" by radical new information, new philosophical concepts, and new "rules for living" ... possibly involving legal, religious, or ethical matters.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Taurus -- especially if near 17°: Your financial structures will be challenged by something that can only be described as a crisis or emergency that involves a sudden ending, a complete termination of something you share in common with partners or "other people," or a "death" of some sort.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Gemini -- especially if near 17°: Personal responsibilities and possibly involvements with your career and professional life face serious challenges from changes in your areas of partnership, close associates, and legal alliances.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Cancer -- especially if near 17°: Plans for the future ... possibly something hindered by a long-standing and major psychological problem (possibly related to your relationship with your father or another "authority figure") faces disruption and change from circumstances involving health, lifestyle choices, or significant alterations in the kind of work and service you provide -- including both paid and unpaid "jobs" that are your responsibility to handle.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Leo -- especially if near 17°: Goals that involve your career direction, personal ideals, friendships, or altruistic visions face challenge from a complete redefinition of your creative style, your relationships with your children and "brain-children," and the risks you are willing to take to put yourself and your talents "in the spotlight of attention." A completely new self-image may be in the making.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Virgo -- especially if near 17°: Matters involving your career and profession face challenge because of disruptions, destruction, and radical change involving your home, family situation, and private life.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Libra -- especially if near 17°: Your acquired expertise, your religious and philosophical structures, and the wisdom of experience you've gained through the years face substantial change because of new knowledge you have acquired (or will soon acquire), new and revolutionary ways of thinking, and major adjustments in the way you communicate and share what you believe. This may involve the discovery of information "you didn't want to know."
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Scorpio -- especially if near 17°: Responsibilities you have for "joint assets," shared income and property, or the management of other people's resources may encounter major problems because of a collapse or substantial reorganization within your own financial structures or other channels of physical support.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Sagittarius -- especially if near 17°: Major changes in your sense of who you are and the impact you need to have on the world may be rocked by the absence, loss, or need for "new arrangements" in the area of partnerships, associates, allies, and legal connections. Your own changing persona may in fact instigate some of these adjustments. Powerful themes of personal transition ... ending and beginning again ... are playing out in your life at this time.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Capricorn -- especially if near 17°: Arduous, structured, and possibly "thankless" work that you have established in your life may be altered permanently by an occurrence that may strike "like a bombshell from out of left field." Something out of sight and in the background of your life ... something that may involve elements of treachery and betrayal, when objectively analyzed ... may impact the services you perform, the "jobs" you do, and possibly your physical health.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Aquarius -- especially if near 17°: Something that involves a long-standing creative ability, your view of your own talents and assets in "drawing attention to yourself," your usual habits in self-promotion, your sense of responsibility to your children and "brain-children," and your reticence when it comes to taking chances will be changed permanently by the arrival of a new, visionary goal of substantial importance. A major redirection regarding your professional targets is in the making.
If your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or an important planetary placement is in Pisces -- especially if near 17°: Your home and family structures, things you may have depended on ... or worked to build ... for a long time face substantial changes because of radical new directions and adjustment in your professional life and public status, your identity to the world at large.
In other news:
Mars in Gemini has formed a trine to Uranus in Aquarius. A trine is an angle of 120 degrees. The planets situated this way are considered to be in a benevolent, advantageous relationship, each offering the other outlets for mutually favorable expression.
This is an energy of "inspired action," which, while it is much more short-lived than the Saturn / Pluto problems I've just been describing, does offer you a window of opportunity to devise multiple avenues of response to some of the challenges that are forming now. To be honest, this is a very mild "silver lining" to the huge cloud of challenge that's going to hang around for most of the next year, but perhaps it's better than nothing.
And finally ...
Also, the Full Moon between the The Sun in Gemini and the Moon in Sagittarius has occurred as of early Sunday morning in the U.S.
The opposition between the Gemini Sun and the Sagittarius Moon represents the basic division between "what I know and believe" and "what society says is moral and correct." The energy of the Gemini Sun under stress can be exceedingly fond of "sound bite mottos" and superficial, easy answers ... and there is a real tendency to snap off a quick one-liner that sounded good for half a second, and hear the sappy, silly, stupidity of its content only when your own words ring back in your ears.
We've all known those moments when we'd give anything to recall what we just said ... and wish to goodness we'd thought a moment longer before letting that knee-jerk response fall out of our mouth. That feeling really is the theme now in all its glory ... so be forewarned.
The Sagittarius Moon, however, feels the lure of greater wisdom and more philosophical depth as it should apply to what we say we think and what we think we believe. It brings more information ... and a more eclectic, inclusive viewpoint to confront our pat answers, asking that we consider Life's bigger picture and maybe adjust our own rules for living to accommodate a more generous and humane way of looking at the world -- and our place in it.
This can be one of those moments when you really have to bring your ideas and conduct into line with your own ethical, religious, and philosophical structure ... when you have to walk your talk -- or change your mind, whichever is more appropriate. Often these "opportunities" come about when we confront our own hypocrisy ... or see that of others unfolding in the world around us.
Depending on the circumstances, it can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Hence, the touchiness that traditionally goes with the full Moon and its tensions. But it's also a time of necessary growth ... and, let's face it, humans being what they are, it generally takes discomfort to make that happen. Ok. Here it comes again.

The Sun in Gemini
May 21 to June 21
Around the midnight hour this morning in the United States, the Sun moved into Gemini. When the Sun is in Gemini, people use their personal energy in pursuits that accent their intellectual abilities and communications skills.
With The Sun in Gemini, they value behaviors and methods that are inventive and innovative, that involve the manipulation of facts and information, and that make use of abilities like reading, writing, lecturing, conversing, listening, studying and combining different pieces of knowledge to reach new conclusions. There is extra emphasis on being logical, analytical, reasonable, imaginative, and clever. They may also feel unusually restless and need to move around physically as well as mentally.
Under stress, people may be unusually nervous, closed-minded, opinionated, confused, cynical, forgetful, and even dishonest.

The Sun in Taurus Square to Uranus in Aquarius
The Sun in Taurus went square to Uranus in Aquarius late yesterday afternoon. Generically this indicates a time of tension between your financial interests, income requirements, and your desire for economic stability conflicting with your need for more adventure and freedom in your professional life, more opportunity to "call your own shots" professionally, and the likelihood of "surprises" that can affect your professional or public status.
You can also feel it as a time of stress between your need to be unconventional, rebellious, and "free to do your own thing" in order to be yourself ... hindered by your need for security in your private life, your desire to have predictable conditions for your family to rely on, and your requirement for a comfortable home you can retreat into, enjoy, and know will always be there for you.
Obviously, this can be a restless time as the friction between stability and greater liberty rub and chafe against each other, when the need to be consistent and supply support and income and the desire for more excitement (or perhaps the discovery of involuntary changes -- which can be pretty exciting!!) reach their greatest point of tension for the year.
This aspect does happen every year ... when dreams of owning your own business, building a professional life without so many responsibilities, or the sudden and surprising opportunity to "do something else" (as in, "Here's your pink slip") stirs up anxiety about how to pay the bills if you do find yourself face to face with these new conditions.
Fortunately for most of us it's usually played out on the stage of our imaginations rather than making us look up the nearest unemployment office so we can get down there and register. But if you're feeling the tug between "I gotta be free" vs. "I gotta pay the bills" ... you're feeling these two energies bump up against each other. This fairly intense feeling will roam the edges of your attention for the next week or so. Specifically, you may find these experiences and feelings popping up over the next ten days.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aries: This tension is playing out pretty much as described: The need to keep things stable in your financial life rubs against a desire to kick over the traces and live the life of a vagabond. Thoughts of "doing something else for a living" ... bump up against economic considerations. Sudden new goals and objectives may strain budgetary considerations.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Taurus: Your desire to be attractive to others and accommodating in your relationships, to keep people convinced you are pleasant, helpful, and generous, and even your need to splurge on some little personal extravagances run into problems because of sudden changes in your professional calendar ... or a decision that you want more freedom in meeting the responsibilities that are expected of you.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Gemini: Plans you are putting together ... or just a desire for some quiet, secluded "down time" to catch your breath and recharge your emotional batteries may be interrupted by sudden upsets that could be broadly described as a philosophical or ethical crisis. A bit of upsetting news or unexpected information may disturb the peace and tranquility you're looking for over the next 7 - 10 days.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Cancer: Some project, goal, or experimental effort may have to accommodate sudden changes in the resources you share with others. Friendships or social plans may conflict with an unexpected crisis or emergency. Or the opportunity to act on an ideal or vision that has great future potential (perhaps for more people than just you) may be jangled -- or uncomfortably stimulated -- by an abrupt ending, a time of transition, or something that broadly represents a "sudden death" in the changes it brings for you to cope with.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Leo: The need for stability and "maintaining appearances" in your professional life may be threatened by the volatility, unreliability, or unpredictable changes introduced by "other people" in your world. Your opportunity to shine in your public life and otherwise enjoy the spotlight has to accommodate the independent ... and perhaps not altogether welcome ... actions of an impulsive, rebellious, inconsistent partner.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Virgo: Your efforts to expand your influence, to put the wisdom of your experience into operation, or to act according to your personal beliefs and ethics may be challenged by upsets in your work situation. Unexpected changes regarding a colleague, unexpected health concerns, or a minor crisis affecting the work you do (including errands, favors, and unpaid commitments) may challenge some of your set beliefs about "how things should be done."
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Libra: A strong need to change your personal direction into "something better" and more satisfying may have to accommodate a crisis involving your children, some "pet project" you might call one of your brain-children, or simply the decision that you must have more recognition for your own unique contributions. Your need to get more joy out of life may urge you to put a sudden end to some role you've been playing or some "identity" you've assumed for a while.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Scorpio: The need to accommodate other people, to be part of a team effort, to support partnerships, or to see things from another person's viewpoint faces challenge from upsets at home, crises involving other family members, or an unexpected emergency in your private life -- possibly an emotional reaction from you yourself that catches everyone by surprise.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Sagittarius: Peaceful conditions at work, considerations involving health and comfort, or your efforts to provide helpful service to someone in need may be upset by new ideas, sudden radical insights that affect the way you think about what you're doing ... or possibly a tactless remark or piece of information you offer that is full of truth but unlikely to find a welcome reception.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Capricorn: Your wish to be appreciated for your creativity, the need to kick loose for a while and have fun, or efforts to really shine at something you both enjoy and are good at ... hits a conflict involving your finances, income, or support sources. You may face an unexpected expense involving your children . Or you may make an abrupt, surprising decision involving money, income, or purchases for "selfish" reasons. Unsettled conditions involving money interfere with your ability to enjoy yourself.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aquarius: The need for more personal independence, the chance to be eccentric, to really kick loose and be different or at least do something out of the ordinary ... interferes with your desire for a stable, secure, reliable home life, and vice versa. Some personal quirk, indulgence, or eccentric choice may upset your family members. There's just no way to accommodate both impulses in this situation.
If your Sun or Ascendant is in Pisces: An unexpressed need for more personal freedom, something you may not recognize consciously yet, impulses you have pushed down and denied for years may break out in your ideas, opinions, or even slips of the tongue. Choices, professed opinions, and "saying what you think" to others may reveal a hidden subconscious agenda that surprises even you.
In other news
Venus goes into Cancer today. When Venus is in Cancer, people are more sensitive, intuitive, protective, and sentimental in their relationships. They look to their family members and those they consider "part of the family" for emotional support ... and to want to solidify connections with these people.
Home life, privacy, and tending to deep psychological and security needs will take on more priority. People want closer emotional alliances with family members and other important people. They may show noticeable nostalgia, concern with tradition, and dwell on memories and "the past:"
When Venus is in Cancer, there is a maternal quality to the romantic side of life. With such strong emphasis on family connections, people are looking to "mother" their loved ones, and be mothered in return. Thus there is more accent on being dependable, domestic, sheltering, nurturing, security-minded, and able to supply what is wanted and needed without being asked.
People use money to improve their home situation and private lives and make purchases that add to the comfort and safety of loved ones and family members. The care of (or interest in) children may be evident - even to the point of "babying" loved ones, who, while they may not specifically need this ... may respond well, nevertheless.
Under stress, the energy used in relationships becomes childish, hypersensitive, dependent, anxious, obsessive, and emotionally unbalanced. People seek to meet their emotional needs by being passive, moody, clinging, complaining, "depressed," self-pitying, and touchy. These tactics may not be constructive in the long run, but they can get attention rather quickly ... which may be the whole point, after all.

The New Moon in Taurus
The New Moon in Taurus is a double dose of stability, grounding, and focus on the practical use of material resources. The predominant energy now shifts from starting new projects and ventures ... to finding the money and other support these efforts will need in order to flourish.
With this New Moon, issues of income, spending habits, acquisition of property and possessions, the most efficient use of assets, and the setting of long-term "unalterable" plans are on the front burner of attention now ... for everyone. Attitudes become noticeably more determined as both enthusiasm and belligerence subside ... and the resolve to move forward fortifies the goals you have recently set for yourself.
Overall, there is more patience available now ... and the slower pace that goes with making sure everything works "according to plan." There is a natural resistance to change ... which covers everything from changing course to changing your mind, although if there is greater profit involved, you can always be persuaded. The leading influence now is very interested in financial increase and the proper management of physical resources -- including your own time and energy.
There is an underlying feeling in the world that having enough money is now a survival issue -- which explains why it is such a primary concern, for everyone. This is where the investment of personal wealth occurs which hopefully brings the dividends you'll need at "harvest." The choices you'll make now depend on just exactly what you want to reap when that time comes.
With some serious potential for change and transition looming in the near future -- and lasting over the rest of the year, holding to those plans and staying the course may be lots easier to anticipate than to actually accomplish. But for now the determination is pretty solid ... and it will take the pressure of experiences in the future to knock them into different channels.
Overall, this is a peaceful, placid, unhurried energy, one that enjoys comfort and sensual pleasures ... and wants harmony to prevail so that satisfaction can continue. With the mess coming up in the Gemini / Sagittarius sectors in the coming weeks, however ... this could just be the calm before the storm. Stay tuned.

Neptune will have gone retrograde by the time you get this mail, a condition that will last until late October. An article on Neptune Retrograde is here:
If you have planets in your Natal Chart located between about 6° (because of the allowable orb of influence) and 11° of any sign, and if you know where 8° to 11° of Libra is located in your Natal Chart, you can see what's happening in your life while this strange and elusive energy is at work. I've described the work of Neptune with Natal placements by both planet and sign. Have a look.
