The Current Aquarius Stellium

A very interesting pattern is arranging itself in the sky at the moment. The Sun, Mercury, Venus and Neptune are all conjunct in Aquarius ... sextile to Mars in Aries ... trine to Saturn in Gemini ... inconjunct to Jupiter in Cancer (and on Saturday morning the Moon was also part of this arrangement) ... and are mediating the loose opposition between Saturn and Pluto.

The Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Neptune conjunction brings a powerful merging of ego energy and interests, combined with intellectual focus and communications ability, combined with connections to money and relationships, combined finally with spiritual inclinations and mystical inspiration ... all together in one tight package in the highly progressive, altruistic, and future oriented sign of Aquarius.

The individual results that derive from the experiences of this time will mirror this multi-faceted arrangement, in your life and in the world around you.

In the natural flow of available energy now, you (and everyone else) are firmly fixed on the future, on long-term goals and ambitions, on experimentation with ways to improve the quality of your life -- and that of "society in general," if possible, and on bringing a greater spiritual dimension into your everyday existence. This is a time of comprehensive, revolutionary, and ground-breaking liberation and reform.

With Sun conjunct Mercury ... you (and everyone else) are highly invested in your personal opinions, knowledge, and ideas ... some of which may be quite spectacular and extensive in their impact -- so do let the brainstorming begin ... or continue!!

With Venus as part of the mix ... partnerships, your participation in relationships, your identification with your abstract values, and the way you acquire and spend your money may be included in the end product of what you create from all this marvelous inspiration.

Neptune's presence adds karmic overtones to what you may produce in the next several weeks ... as well as a special mystical and artistic "edge" to your creations and insights that may be ... well, awesome ... in its final form.

What you think, what you do with those insights, and how you act to bring them into reality will show a special genius that is arguably magic as it is meant to be displayed.

If you are involved in anything creative -- from actual art to the fashioning of new life circumstances for yourself -- this would be a good time to keep a journal of your ideas, take notes on the possibilities that present themselves -- and the notions flash through your mind ... and watch for the world to open paths that are quite possibly miraculous.

With Mars in Aries ... the ability to act on these things for a positive outcome is possible in ways that have not been available for nearly 50 years.

With Saturn in Gemini ... your ability to turn these abstract inspirations into tangible "art" ... honest-to-God solid things of substance and worth ... is also right on hand for you to claim! You may find yourself able to use your mind, your talents, and your energy in ways that amaze you -- and the sheer momentum of all this power may carry you quite a way down the road.

The true results of this may not even plant itself fully in your vision until after Mercury goes direct and passes over this place again -- say toward the end of February. So watch for that to blossom as well.

March ... as Sun / Venus move into Aries, and Mercury now moving "direct" goes on into Pisces,. ... and Mars goes about its business of solid, practical, physical building in the financially-focused sign of Taurus ... may bring another delightful "new wave" of effort along with fresh avenues to make all this ingenuity and initiative pay off in true coin of the realm.

(The problem then will be that the square to Jupiter may tempt you to overextend yourself in your commitments ... and hand you more opportunities to pursue than you can possibly handle without being triplets.)

But -- that's an interesting embarrassment of riches to have to handle. As all of these Aquarius planets (specifically Sun, Mercury, and Venus ... as well as Mars in Aries) move to aspect Pluto (the Aquarius placements by sextile, Mars by trine), a revolutionary change in the goals you are working toward -- even the kinds of goals you are working toward will take place.

This is an extremely creative and fortuitous time to be laying the groundwork for new ways of living, new ways of using and acquiring money, and new ways of thinking about yourself and your world. What do you want to accomplish with the rest of your life? The world is literally your oyster as you frame an answer to that question.

Expect the ripples of what begins now to play out beautifully over the next year or so -- especially during the signs of Gemini (with the conjunction to Saturn offering solidity ... and the opposition to Pluto during that time forcefully changing your direction into "something better!!"), Cancer, and Leo (with the sequential conjunctions between the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter playing themselves out in those two signs). By then, the Saturn / Pluto conjunction will be separating and weakening as well.

There will, of course, be more to say about all this as that time comes closer. Meanwhile ... listen to what your artistic, financial, and personal inspirations are telling you. Watch for the arrival of new knowledge and information to help you move these projects forward.

Prepare to follow through with assertive and pioneering action. And by this time next year, you will look back at what happened in the interim -- with enough perspective to appreciate how your world was transformed by events and choices unfolding now. It's time to be brave and take risks to reach your dreams.

With the inconjunct between the Aquarius stellium and Jupiter in Cancer, the need for family and private life adjustments to accommodate your ambitions and commitments ... and the need to find ways to fit all this into your work schedule may become part of the challenge. Also, do watch your tendency to try to "do it all" ... because that temptation will certainly be strong -- and yet your physical health and stamina may suffer under the load. Remember you are human. It's your potential that's infinite.

Sun Sextile to Mars
January 23 to February 15

The Sun in Aquarius is now sextile to Mars in Aries ... a nice aspect of progress and productivity that will last more than three weeks before it starts to diminish. Sextiles represent moments of opportunity and insight, moments when the energy of both the planets can be put to beneficial use, stimulated by the assets and qualities of one another. Here's what the aspect looks like on paper.

With the Sun in Aquarius, you (and everyone else in the world) are concerned with having more freedom in your life, more opportunity to live by your own rules and standards. ... content deleted ... Fortunately at the moment, Mars -- the astrological metaphor for action and initiative, is perfectly primed to help all these wonderful changes happen for you. Notice there are a couple of caveats in what I just said, however. Neither of these energies deals with frustration quietly -- or calmly. This is not a combination that will sit and gently seethe under pressure. If it gets upset, everyone in a five mile radius will hear its complaints ... and rue the moment this feisty dynamo spun into high gear.

Take a close look now at what you want to accomplish with this energy. You've got plenty of time to accomplish things that contain this wonderfully productive force as part of its "natal chart." And when you're ready to act, don't dawdle. This energy won't be any kinder to your hindrances than to those from outside conditions. It's also a fairly rare aspect, this Aquarius Sun / Aries Mars combination. A quick look back through time turned up January, 1955, as the last time it happened. So ... take a deep breath, and get going.

The real kicker, however, is the fact that this Moon in Cancer will be Void of Course Moon virtually all week-end long!!! It goes void at 2:03 PM Saturday afternoon EST, 11:03 AM Saturday morning PST) ... and doesn't straighten itself out for 37 hours. (3:31 AM EST; 12:31 AM PST Monday morning, January 28). Consider this Mother Nature's way of telling you (in good Cancerian fashion!!) to sit back, do nothing, get some rest, and mellow out big time this week end.

I think my Significant Other has visions of a video movie marathon plowing channels in his mind for the downtime involved (no pun intended). You would be well-advised to do something of the sort yourself. Take up the suit of armor again on Monday. I'm betting it will still be there and waiting for you!

Back with more later. As I've mentioned before, it's a very busy time in the sky right now ... this Void of Course Moon notwithstanding.

For those of you who need a better explanation of what The Void of Course Moon is all about ... here's the link to the article on the site. Reading during this peculiar time on earth is very much one of the activities allowed!!

Mars in Aries
January 18 - February 28

When Mars is in Aries, people are adventurous, pioneering, and assertive. They use tactics and perspectives that are independent and aggressive, that rely on individual initiative, that have a distinct element of competition, and that respond well to a direct approach. This Mars in Aries energy is active in matters of personal drive and promotion. It is very up-front and honest about its goals and desires -- and its willingness to go after results by the most direct route available.

There is also emphasis on being confident, positive, and in control. Winning, making a good impression, and taking on the world -- are also immediate concerns for this energy. There is considerable emphasis on "taking care of Number One" -- sometimes without a lot of tact to ease the rough edges of this rather undisguised and aggressive enthusiasm.

Under stress with Mars in Aries, people may act in ways that are belligerent, contentious, disruptive, and rude. They may pursue their desires and ambitions too forcefully, too impulsively, and with too much self-will and self-centeredness. This energy when stressed is also known for being irritable, temperamental, aggravating, arrogant, bossy, defiant, and uncooperative.

Venus in Aquarius
January 18 - February 11

When Venus is in Aquarius, people tend to be daring, inventive, and unorthodox in their relationships. They emphasize qualities such as altruism, compassion, creativity, friendliness, and imagination in the methods they use to attract love - and express the romantic side of their natures in gestures that are ingenious, intellectual, fun-loving, and original.

They are concerned with things like idealism, social vision, humanitarian concerns, and - ironically - their own ability to maintain personal independence within the context of the relationship that attracts them.

When Venus is in Aquarius, the conduct of relationships is marked by inspirational notions, eclectic interests, appreciate of what is unique in each of the partners involved, imaginative expressions, and unconventional moments - that may only remotely qualify as "romantic" in most normal people's minds.

Venus in Aquarius is an eccentric energy unto itself . . . with an underpinning of personal magnetism that can be surprising and very "off the wall" - to put it kindly. Relationships and the use of money tend to have elements of "the unexpected" involved in the transactions, along with unusual emphasis on future oriented hopes and dreams and on improving the overall quality of life for all concerned.

Under stress, the behavior found in relationships becomes extreme, fanatic, radical, unstable, willful, exasperating, and rebellious. There are often abrupt breaks, and while relationships are conducted with tremendous intensity while they last, they are also notoriously short-lived. A willful insistence on personal independence makes intimacy very unlikely, and the refusal to compromise or curtail personal directions and desires undermines even the semblance of cooperation and partnership.

Sun in Aquarius
January 19 - February 18

When the Sun is in Aquarius, people tend to use their personal energy more adventurously, compassionately, and imaginatively. They value behaviors and methods that are sociable, innovative, clever, eclectic, original, self-sufficient, liberal, open-minded, and even strange. There is also emphasis on abstract concerns like their goals for the future, "making progess," being independent, advancing their humanitarian interests, and dealing with friends and others in their social and professional network.

They may further be concerned with the rewards they want from their professional activities, broad issues of the collective good and social welfare, and with the future, in general.

Under stress with the Sun in Aquarius, people may be unusually abrupt, erratic, radical, impulsive, willful, exasperating, rebellious, contrary, inconsistent and irresponsible.

Venus Conjunct The Sun in Capricorn
January 14 through February 10 2002

On January 14, Venus finally caught up in its orbit to align with The Sun at 24° of Capricorn.

This is an aspect that forms about once a year, but the signs and the timing are variable. Last year, Venus became conjunct to The Sun while in retrograde motion at 9° of Aries on March 29. It finally went direct again late on April 19 -- and has been chasing The Sun ever since -- trying to catch up again, a pattern that will play out between these two celestial bodies as long as they exist.

The Sun, of course, represents your individual ego, your sense of self-identity, and in its transiting position will give information about the kind of general life interests that have your attention at the moment. Venus represents your preferences for handling money and economic concerns and your style of managing partnerships. When conjunct, these interests become closely merged in the way you think about, work with, and use the energies they represent.

There are a couple of interesting things happening this year with the Sun / Venus conjunction. First of all, the two planets start out in the sober, conservative, self-controlled sign of Capricorn -- a sign known for its fixation on professional interests, but not well-associated at all with anything fun, romantic, or loving.

Therefore, for the moment, these career and economic concerns have a strong upper hand on the agendas of most people -- especially as they are concerned with money, profession, status, and your conduct with associates, Wherever this conjunction occurs in your chart (whatever house contains 24° of Capricorn) your attention to the affairs of that house is receiving an extra boost of energy from the cosmos -- one that should be quite pleasant.

In a way, this has been going on since the middle of last month, as Venus in Capricorn began to approach its conjunction with the Sun in Capricorn from its trailing position. But an aspect that is forming is different psychologically from one that has already happened and is beginning to separate. I was actually taught, years ago, that applying aspects were stronger than separating ones. That wisdom is still widely preached -- and perhaps widely accepted.

But at least in terms of transits -- movement going on in the sky in present-day time -- I have not found that to be the case. (Since I don't live inside the skin of other people, I haven't been able to do observations that suit me about the effects of applying versus separating aspects as they pertain to Natal Charts -- birth charts, but I'm inclined to believe the same logic I've discovered holds true there as well.)

In my opinion, observations, and conclusions, I have found that applying aspects, aspects that are forming as the faster-moving planet enters the orb of influence with the slower moving planetm but has not yet reached the exact degree and minute of perfect alignment, will represent "planning phases," and are more associated with desires, brainstorming, subconscious urges, and fantasies than with actual events.

Once the exact aspect forms, things begin to happen in the outside world. I liken it to the trigger being pulled that will launch a new round of experience, putting events into motion out onstage where they are apparent to everyone -- and where certainly the person(s) being affected by the influence can work with it more easily.

Things which are conscious are arguably easier to see and perhaps easier to control than things that are still roaming around in the murky, abstract, subconscious planning stages, where the question of whether they will ever see the light of day remains unanswered.

To carry on with this analogy, for the past month there has been a lot of quiet, hidden, perhaps even unconscious activity taking place in your life regarding structure -- as that concept affects your relationships, your handling of professional and economic concerns, and your feelings of personal involvement in these matters.

This may have shown itself as an "automatic" tendency to be a little more conservative in your spending and budgeting over the Christmas holidays, a background level of anxiety that you really don't want to face directly or acknowledge in conversations with others about your professional progress, situation, or future. It would also have caused you to be unintentionally standoffish toward loved ones and associates and to put a lot more emphasis on meeting your responsibilities and fulfilling your partnership obligations than on being intimate and having fun.

Because these concerns were still somewhat hidden, you might not have noticed unless you are exceptionally self-aware or unless somebody in one of your close relationships decided to fuss about being slighted or ignored. You may have had a lot of good reasons why being a bit more cautious and frugal in your holiday spending was a good idea -- the global recession and emotional repercussions from September 11th being obvious possibilities for blame.

But lingering worries about the future, especially your professional and financial future would have tugged at your awareness from back behind the curtain. You may have put on a good face and tried to ignore your unappeased anxiety -- but the problem remained, nevertheless, kind of sapping your spirits and your joy as the calendar moved from 2001 to 2002.

The approaching Sun / Venus conjunction in Capricorn would have been marked by attitudes that fixed on maintaining your dignity, being a bit touchy about your value and position in both professional and personal relationships, wanting appreciation for your diligence and persistence, congratulating yourself privately on your self-control and reliability, sticking to conservative and traditional habits -- especially in spending and celebration. There may even have been a reluctant nostalgia -- in wanting to stick to habits you knew were accepted and predictable.

None of this may have impinged too strongly on your consciousness, however. The approaching conjunction works through automatic responses, knee-jerk reactions, feelings that are hard to define and which you may not even question, and a tendency to make choices that seem right at the time but which you'd have to think about for a while to directly justify.

For this reason, energy during the time of the approaching aspect can be strangely uncomfortable -- as if you know on some level that your strings are being pulled by something outside your range of vision. You may not like it much -- but there also doesn't seem to be a lot you can do about it. It can be an annoying, off-putting feeling for the more logical types to handle. The intuitives among us find it easier to go with the flow -- and see what happens.

Now that the conjunction has occurred -- and the "trigger" has been pulled, so to speak, you have more conscious, more direct access to the personal issues that involve status, reputation, prestige, your moderate and cautious use of assets, self-discipline, discretion, correctness, playing by the rules, and the value of plain old-fashioned (naturally!) hard work. At the very least, you are more willing to admit your concern with these areas in your life -- and to ask for respect because you are meeting your "requirements" here with all due diligence.

But a planet forming a conjunction that is too close to The Sun is in a condition astrologers call "combust." This makes an interesting little side trip for us to explore here -- because not many texts will even mention, let alone deal with a combust state, and you will find conflicting opinions about just what this means and when it occurs. Some astrologers consider a planet to be combust if it is within 10° of The Sun. Some astrologers consider a combust planet to be heavily weakened, even crippled in its ability to perform properly in a Natal chart.

The theory behind this phenomenon holds that the Sun "scorches" the planet that has come too close to its emanating energy, thereby damaging its ability to function and harming its sovereignty to exercise control and rulership over the houses it theoretically governs in a personal chart and the issues that the corrupted planet naturally represents. Some older texts refer to this position as "being under the Sun's rays" -- or "under the Sunbeams."

Again, my observation and experience with this phenomenon differs somewhat from the conventional wisdom that proposes the planet and all its concerns are injured or crippled by being in this position.

I allow an orb of only about 2° to consider a planet combust -- and my experience suggests that when in this condition, the concerns of that planet become so "merged" with ego energy (which is what The Sun represents) that boundaries melt and the planet, while still able to exercise authority over its concerns and the houses it rules in a chart, has an "inflated ego" attached to it whenever and wherever it operates.

Thus, when Mercury, for example, is combust the Sun, which happens several times a year, one's opinions, knowledge, and information become so "ego driven" other points of view don't even get noticed, let alone a fair hearing. (When the whole world is in this position because of the transiting placements of the planets in the sky in real present-day time, this presents all kinds of obvious problems in everyday life!)

When Venus is combust the Sun -- which has been the case since the first of the year and will last about another 10 days, people become more likely to treat partners as if they were part of some single conglomerate entity rather than having separateness, autonomy, different agendas, and different requirements.

In other words, you (and everyone) will view "you and your partners" as being "a unit" and will treat one another as if there is no question but that you are of one accord -- with the same drives, the same goals, the same outlooks, the same values, which, of course are your ego values -- and any hint of deviation from this can cause quite a scene!!! "Deviation," however, is likely, since your partners will feel the same way about you and the role they assume you should be filling and the support you should be offering in their lives.

The possibility for problems is obvious.

Now -- this year -- on the 19th, just as Mercury goes retrograde, an interesting shift in the Sun / Venus energy takes place as the two of them move into Aquarius, in tandem.

As the Venus combust The Sun energy begins to weaken -- let's say about the 27th or 28th of January -- the distinctions between "you" and "the other person" will return to the conduct of your relationships, but with a nice aura of genuine friendship and freedom attached to it in ways that just weren't happening during Capricorn, when "takin' care of business" was much more the order of the day.

But as Mercury retrogrades across this position -- say around the 26th, forming a very close conjunction between itself, The Sun, Venus and Neptune -- you may find your whole outlook regarding money, partnerships, friendships, and the kind of freedom you want in your life takes on a much different "feel" than the fairly nose-to-the-grindstone atmosphere that has recently held sway.

Your sense of adventure will come to the fore -- which may mark a welcome change from the sober, guarded position you've held (along with everybody else) during this particular transit of Capricorn. You will be more spontaneous, more liberal, open-minded, and tolerant. You may find yourself interested in exploring new interests -- by yourself, with friends, with partnerships, and very likely with new partners -- which could be its own kind of excitement!!

The Aquarius energy that sits poised on the horizon is quick-witted, sociable, accessible, non-judgmental, idealistic, and humane. It can also be independent to the point of seeming "detached" to people whose personal style prefers more engagement and intimacy with their partners than this rebellious, self-sufficient energy normally will permit. But it does offer to shake up your social life -- and bring you new ideas about how to manage and participate in your associations. That this may include new associates makes an interesting element in the mix.

I'll have more to say about this unusual and fascinating multiple conjunction when the time comes. For now, though, realize the whole tenor of your social surroundings and personal focus is about to undergo a remarkable shift. Fasten your seat-belts. There are steep hills, sharp valleys, and hairpin curves ahead, and this roller-coaster moment of life could turn into quite a ride.

The Moon is void of course for eight minutes tomorrow (Friday, January 18) -- between 9:27 and 9:35 PM EST (6:27 and 6:35 PM PST). So, see -- that phenomenon isn't always something that throws a kink into your whole day. Friday is, however, an extremely busy day in the sky -- with several long-term aspects also adding their energy to the ambience. Expect to hear about a number of changes and other occurrences of note in the next few days.

Sun / Venus opposing Jupiter
January 3 - 10 2002

Venus in Capricorn opposed Jupiter in Cancer early yesterday morning. (7:22 AM EST, 4:22 AM PST), joining the Sun in Capricorn which formed this angle two days ago. This ushers in a week of interesting, if less than admirable, interaction between three notoriously hedonistic energies in two extremely status- and security-conscious signs.
