Saturn Transiting Direct in Gemini
February 7 - October 10 2003
The document I promised you now that Saturn has gone direct is more than living up to its namesake. The work on it is requiring exacting care and discipline. It is also going slowly and turning into quite a lengthy manuscript -- far longer than can be reasonably sent in one chunk -- or even put on the website without preparing the reader for what it will contain.
While working on yet another segment of it again last night, I decided that one way to handle its length is to serialize it over the next 7 - 10 days since things in the sky are fairly quiet at the moment.
The importance of this infamous metaphor in the evolution of an individual -- and his experience with personal karma -- is legendary among astrologers. Because of its involvement with structure, hard work, restraint, control, "paying your dues," and getting along on the bare essentials, Saturn's energy at its best is involved with building and effort -- to produce sound and dependable assets for the future, and at its worst with the judgment of how well we have measured up in our tasks -- with harsh criticism and grudging acknowledgement of adequacy being far more prominent than praise.
When it retrogrades, the need to rebuild and fortify parts of your life -- as shown by Saturn's position in your Natal Chart becomes not only obvious, but often a grinding and burdensome task. The demands of Saturn are rarely easy -- and yet the future will often show that his insistent warnings that stronger, more durable features would be absolutely necessary to get us through the challenges ahead were true -- in spades.
Now that Saturn has gone direct, the latest stages of our most recent reconstruction efforts are underway ... and to give this taskmaster all the help we can -- because he essentially does have our survival and best interests at heart -- another look at what he is trying to accomplish in your life might not hurt. This at least gives you a chance to consider what is underway in your life -- and offer conscious help and support to this often maligned and vilified energy.
The Saturn Retrograde article that was published a few months ago in The Enchanted Sprite has been temporarily placed here for you to read through again ... to refresh your memory and give the preliminary information you will need for the serialized segments of Step by Step I mentioned above.
Subsequent segments of this series will detail Saturn's transiting effects by planet -- most especially if you have a planet between 6 and 17 degrees of any sign. Strictly speaking, Saturn doesn't do its little triple-transit wardance across degrees 16 - 22 of Gemini this time ... but in practical terms, everyone will feel its pinch (as always). However, those with placements at 18 and 19 degrees of Gemini will get off a whole lot easier this time than those with Gemini placements elsewhere in the sign.
More tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Venus in Pisces Trine
Jupiter in Cancer Square
Saturn in Gemini
February 2002
We've had an interesting one-two punch occur with the transit of Venus in Pisces this year. On Saturday, it was trine to Jupiter in Cancer. Today, it's square to Saturn in Gemini.
At first glance, this combination sounds like it should be a real contradiction in terms. Jupiter ... arguably the most beneficial metaphor in the entire astrological family is in great aspect to Venus, everybody's favorite symbol of love and money -- but Venus, the keeper of passion and treasure, is also square to Saturn ... a Gloomy Gus, if ever there was one, raining on everyone's parade.
A trine, first of all, is an angle between two planets of approximately 120 degrees. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a benevolent, advantageous relationship to one another, each offering the other outlets for mutually favorable expression - avenues through which to generate and use genuine natural talents and new ideas.
A square, on the other hand, is an angle of approximately 90° -- and planets which aspect each other in this way indicate a time of uncomfortable adjustments between two competing areas of life or signify irritations between two conflicting inner impulses or needs.
Sooo, you ask, how is this apt to work itself out in real life?
Ok ... both Venus and Jupiter represent wonderfully creative, generous, caring, bountiful energies -- and both right now are in emotional, sensitive, compassionate, highly embraceable Water Signs: Venus in Pisces, and Jupiter in Cancer.

The Sun conjunct Uranus
February 2002
The Sun in Aquarius conjuncts (occupies the same degree and minute of arc as) Uranus in Aquarius today.
This happens once every year ... and marks the beginning of a new cycle of progress when goals and ambitions for the future become bolder and more daring. You will begin to seek ways to live with more freedom and ways to guide your life by your own lights. It's a time when you have less interest in "rules" ... and more interest in being uniquely yourself, involved with your own destiny as you yourself define it.
This can be a very liberating, idealistic energy ... as it encourages you to experiment, take risks, and be who you truly are. If there is a credo that supports this energy, it can be summed up in this thought: Be the person you were meant to be and live the life you were meant to live.
That's certainly advice we can all take to heart. And maybe it explains why, as we grow older we become more crotchety, more eccentric, more "colorful," and far more willing to "tell it like it is and let the chips fall where they may." By the time we've reached the proverbial age of wisdom ... we've been through this energy dozens of time, and we know the value of its urging.

Venus in Pisces
February 11 - March 7
Venus moved into late Pisces yesterday. With Venus in Pisces, people are more sensitive, compassionate, empathetic, and highly idealistic in their relationships.
They emphasize qualities like forbearance, devotion, generosity, tolerance, and "spiritual connection" in the methods they use to attract love - and express the romantic side of their natures in gestures that are poetic, sentimental, tender, unselfish, and responsive to an almost psychic extent.
People - and their feelings - are unusually fragile, affectionate, and perceptive ... with a desire to "merge into" or "dissolve into" the experience of loving and being loved.
When Venus is in Pisces, the conduct of relationships is marked by an almost mystical vision of love and its power to move, transform, and heal the human soul. People are looking for love as a spiritual experience, a thing of the inner heart and imagination - much more than a thing of the flesh and physical passions.
There is a longing for the "perfect love" and connection with the "soul mate." This is a time of seeking romance in its most imaginative and uncorrupted form. There is also a willingness to sacrifice oneself for the beloved as a gesture of ultimate devotion. Money, too, is used in romantic, quixotic, visionary - and often highly impractical ways.
Under stress, all this delicate idealism degenerates quickly into neurosis, helplessness, hypersensitivity, confusion, and emotional distress. There is an excessive tendency to be or feel victimized, and to be self-sacrificing to the point of being self-destructive.
Relationships are marred and undermined by irresponsible behavior, the refusal to face and deal with "reality," deceptiveness, dishonesty, and an often amazing degree of gullibility. In extreme cases, there is martyrdom, obsession, treachery, paranoia, and literal "craziness" associated with this energy combination.

After stepping briefly back into Capricorn for a little over a week, Mercury, now direct again, will return to its transit through Aquarius tomorrow morning. As it passes 14° (the point at which it went retrograde last month) at the close of this month, you will see intellectual matters, communications issues, contracts, writing, and other Mercury matters that have been stalled -- and reworked during the retrograde phase begin to move forward again with greater speed and new improvements. At least the world will have its head on straight again!

Mars in Aries Trine Pluto in Sagittarius
February 2002
Mars in Aries goes trine to Pluto in Sagittarius today, marking a time of extremely profitable action and progress regarding personal ambitions and revolutionary ideas.
A trine is an angle between two planets of approximately 120 degrees. The planets situated in this way are considered to be in a benevolent, advantageous relationship to one another, each offering the other outlets for mutually favorable expression - avenues through which to generate and use genuine natural talents and new ideas. The one now forming between Mars and Pluto is especially productive.
Mars, the astrological metaphor for personal initiative, ambition, and direct action, is now strongly placed in its own sign of Aries, the energy of enterprise, resourcefulness, candor, assertiveness, and, yes, impatience. In trine to Pluto, the astrological metaphor for revolution and improvement, in Sagittarius, the energy of benevolence, generosity, sophisticated learning, expansion, and philosophical structure ... the stage is set for extremely exciting and dynamic ventures that partake of all these qualities.
In plain English, a radical change in your "rules for living," the philosophies by which you run your life, will both set off and support some aggressive new personal statement about what you want to do, create and become over the next couple of years -- when Mars returns to Aries and trines Pluto in Sagittarius again ... in a later degree of the signs.
There is genuine courage and boldness available here now, however, the courage to take risks you may have wavered on in the past, and make some changes that will have long-range repercussions for the whole structure of your life, especially involving the thoughts on which you base your ethical compass.
It's a time of living and acting with greater verve and honesty. You're not only willing to back up your professed beliefs, the things you know in your heart to be true, with immediate, decisive action, you're pretty much ready to run over anybody foolish enough to get in your way.
This can kick off some extremely expansive and liberating new features in your individual lifestyle ... which you will build with personal power and plain old-fashioned elbow grease over the next two years. At least that amount of time will get you well into the next "stage" of this development -- because you may have selected something of monumental scope to work on during this more-than-a-decade when Pluto in Sagittarius will offer you miraculous inspirations for living a life that is authentically and emphatically you.
If you have personal points at 17° of any sign, but most especially around 17° of Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Gemini, or Libra ... this configuration could mark quite a watershed moment in the course of your life. Your ability to use this energy and this time, will be tremendously enhanced ... and eventually, you will be able to look back and see how, from this point forward, life changed -- into something quite wonderful, with work accomplished with your own vision and under your own steam.
Set your sights high. This vibrant, enthusiastic energy can take you pretty much anywhere you want to go.

The New Moon in Aquarius occurs late tonight ... but the energy for most of the week will be marked and crippled by long periods when The Void of Course Moon in late Aquarius tomorrow (5:21 AM EST; 2:21 AM PST Tuesday morning until 3:53 PM EST; 12:52 PM PST Tuesday afternoon) and then again in Pisces (2:43 AM EST Thursday morning; 11:43 PM PST Wednesday night until 4:26 AM EST FRIDAY morning; 1:26 AM PST FRIDAY morning).
That's right. The Moon will be Void of Course all day long on Valentine's Day in the United States. If you're planning something great and memorable with your Special Sweetie ... and you want your plans to amount to something, better make them quiet, non-time-critical, and maybe horizontal on Thursday!!
Otherwise, do what The Beloved and I are planning to do ... and hold the celebration that matters on Friday instead. The restaurants will be less crowded (for sure!!), the energy will be moving with you instead of against you. You'll just have a much better time. Believe me.
Back with more tomorrow.

February 09, 2002
The Moon goes Void of Course very, very late tonight in the United States (1:50 AM EST -- Sunday morning, 10:50 PM PST -- Saturday night).
It shouldn't affect much for most people ... but it's worth keeping in mind of you're one of the world's "owls" -- like me, who adores being up and about during the night-time hours. Read more about The Void of Course Moon.
The more essential news, however, is that now, and for the next few days, life's natural energy levels are at their lowest ebb in preparation for a time of new initiatives and new beginnings starting with the New Moon in Aquarius on essentially Tuesday (2:40 AM EST -- Tuesday morning, 11:40 PM PST -- Monday night). This is a time astrologers call "The Dark of the Moon" ... which is conducive to bringing matters to a close, tying up loose ends, resting, planning, being quiet and reflective.
For the next couple of days, don't start anything new. For sure don't start anything important. It will not come to fruition. Wait for the better, more positive change in outlook and opportunities that will arrive toward the beginning of next week and unfold on their own schedule.

Mercury went direct yesterday. The time it represents of rethinking, re-evaluating, and reconsidering is drawing to a close. For another quick look at how this is affecting your life -- and where you might invest your mental energy and attention most profitably for the next several weeks, have another glance at the Mercury in Retrograde article.
Saturn went direct on Thursday ... which will also have special interest for all. But, in the interests of keeping this segment of Step by Step at a manageable length, and because this move by Saturn is an aspect of much longer duration, I'll deal with this extensively after the New Moon ... sometime around the middle of next week. I've decided to write a rather extensive piece on this notoriously prickly planet and its energy, and so in order to take my own advice about "not starting anything important now" ... I'll be back to unveil that in a couple of days.
Meanwhile, have a great week-end, everyone. Get some rest!
