Mercury in Aries
March 29 - April 13
Mercury moves into Aries early this morning. Mercury itself is the metaphor for one's use of intellectual energy, abilities in logic and reasoning, and communications skills. When Mercury is in Aries, ideas are very ambitious, assertive, and enthusiastic. Thinking shows a strong capacity for independence, initiative, competitiveness, and pioneering spirit. Mercury in Aries
is known for being adventurous, courageous, direct and dynamic.
There may be a obvious emphasis on winning and dominating. People feel very strongly about their ideas and viewpoints ... and will vigorously push their opinions, often without caring whether those are welcome or not. They may call this "communicating," which it is, technically, . . . but they're really most concerned with "getting their own points across." Accordingly, styles of speaking and writing may be blunt, self-assured, domineering and contentious.
It will certainly be easier to pick a fight ... or get into a spirited debate for the next several weeks. There is extra drive and vigor fueling intellectual ambitions now. People want to get their convictions out where others can see them, and you may have to either present your own notions with equal force -- or stand back and let others have their say while preparing your counterarguments for when they finally wind down.
As Mercury moves hard to catch up with the Aries Sun ... and finally succeeds in the early morning hours of April 7, objectivity will become less and less available. People will identify quite belligerently with their own beliefs and react to intellectual dissent as if it were a personal attack. Tempers will shorten, and the tendency to snap back with an impatient, aggressive remark may set off quite a string of verbal firecrackers ... since everyone is charged with this energy now.
Keep in mind that under stress with this energy out and about, styles of thinking, speaking, and writing become temperamental, defiant, and arrogant. The ideas of others incite contempt and petulance, and there is a strong tendency in everyone to be rebellious, overbearing, self-willed, and uncooperative. Courtesy may be a temporary casualty, along with self-control.

A wonderfully creative and productive week-end is possible over the next few days. The Sun is sextile to Neptune on one side and Saturn on the other. (Translation: Your personal ego, self-confidence, and sense of ambition now have opportunities to use your creativity and practical self-discipline to turn abstract ideas into workable, useful, sensible, and possibly profitable products.)
The energy here is especially good for well-ordered, methodical output, the generation of inventive -- even inspired -- ideas, and the ability to envision greater possibilities for what you want to accomplish over the next several months.
This energy works best in solitary planning and brainstorming, however ... unless you really trust your partners and colleagues to work constructively with the intellectual aggression I've just been describing and not storm off in a snit that just upsets everyone and wastes a lot of time.

Today's major astrological event is the Full Moon ... between the Aries Sun and the Moon in Libra, a tangle of conflicting energies that emphatically blurs the boundaries between ego concerns and relationship requirements.
This particular Full Moon -- like all the other combinations -- occurs once a year, but its special flavor focuses on the need to be independent versus the need to cooperate with others. Right now, everyone is feeling both those concerns to an unusual extent -- and the conflict feels especially prickly.
This is a time when you'll want to forge ahead -- but you have to wait for the other people around you to get their act together, because the things you want to do aren't things you can accomplish all by yourself. You have ambitions you want to reach for ... but you are hampered by the need to "be nice" and "think of others, too." You are charged up with self-confidence and energy ... but you have to negotiate your tactics for the sake of social harmony.
The Devil on one shoulder is urging you to take care of Number One, Go for the Gold, and strike while the iron is hot. The Angel on the other shoulder is clucking about how you don't want to seem pushy, you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, you don't want to give the wrong impression.
You start to see why the Full Moon's energy can drive people crazy. Two steps forward; two steps back. Doing the Ambivalence Waltz.
Just remember everyone is feeling the tug of these inner tides right now, and consequently everybody's feeling a little bit nuts. Under stress, this Full Moon Aries / Libra energy creates circumstances where you feel on edge, easily upset, irritable, frustrated, fussy, anxious, belligerent, and conciliatory ... all at the same time. You may tell somebody off ... only to insist in the next breath, while on the edge of tears yourself, that you really didn't mean what you just said -- you don't know what got into you.
Welcome to PMS in the realm of the cosmos. Only, as I've said ... everybody's got this problem. So take a deep breath and let life mellow out. Try not to punch anyone's lights out today ... 'cause you'll only feel guilty afterwards if you do.

This evening is a marvelous time for constructive, progressive, creative work ... the kind where you get to be alone for a while and regain your balance inside your own space. So give that some thought as a way to move into a better place tomorrow -- because tomorrow looks to be a pretty great day. And a FRIDAY besides!!

Notes from the Ivory Tower
The multi-part information on Pluto in Retrograde is up and ready. I delayed publishing it for an extra day or two because we needed to get a substantial group of new subscribers squared away ... and information on their planet placements distributed. (If you are subscribed to ONLY Step by Step, and you do not know your planet placements in sign and degree, you will need to get back to me to ask for that information with your birthday data.)
Those of you who are new -- either as subscribers or as Premium Members -- should already have that information in your e-mail. It was sent out earlier this morning.
The contents of this article for now describe the energy presently affecting planet placements in 13°to 18° of any sign. It does, however, cover only the Sun through Saturn, planets known to astrologers as "the personal planets" -- as opposed to the outer three planets, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto -- which deal much more extensively in social, generational and peer group influences.
Aspects between Pluto and these three outer planets are most emphatically involved with issues that are usually considered Karmic, with undeniably far-ranging consequences for your future growth and spiritual evolution. At the time I wrote this foundation article a little over a year ago, I didn't consider that my general readership on the website was terribly interested in such weighty matters. But now I figure it's about time I completed the series ... with the "warts and all" description of what these planetary energies do when paired off with each other, for better or worse.
Those will be appearing in the coming weeks. Pluto's work grinds on very, very slowly ... and it won't even go out of retrograde now for another five months, and until it does, the actual results of these long term effects I'm alluding to won't be as readily apparent as they will become in the early part of next year. Therefore, I think it makes more sense to talk about them a little closer to the time you'll actually see changes and pattern shifts coming into view in your life.
Those of you wondering about planets you may have that fall just outside this 13° to 18° section of arc, if your planets are earlier ... you've been through the major resculpting work for which Pluto is so famous. Now, you're dealing with the improvements, reconstruction ... and repercussions. You will probably recognize quite clearly the descriptions of what's recently happened in your life, even if you hadn't thought of it in exactly these terms so far.
Those of you with degrees still ahead of this tiny sliver of concern have not yet been touched by the remarkable effects of this powerful energy -- but you can read about what's coming, if you like. (However, I warn you, sometimes ignorance is bliss.)
In other news
The Sun in Aries squares Jupiter in Cancer tomorrow evening. Family matters and issues in your private life may hand you a lot more to cope with in the next week or so than you can comfortably handle. Beware of taking on commitments or making promises that you haven't thought through. Such things now are apt to grow -- into more than you bargained for.
An attitude of inflated self-importance goes with this energy, as well. Beware of thinking you can accomplish more than is possible. Be realistic about the workload you should take on. Granted the sextile between the Sun and Saturn on Saturday will help you cut back your agenda to more manageable levels -- but it's easier not to make promises in the first place than to have to go back and renegotiate them -- or worse, break them completely.
Remember, everybody is being seduced by the exaggerated optimism of this energy -- so take promises others make to you at this time with that proverbial grain of salt, and don't plan on "delivery" regarding those commitments until they are reconfirmed (and probably pared back or rearranged) about a week from now.

Venus in Aries trines Pluto in Sagittarius
This marks a time when new and more sophisticated insights regarding "what love is all about" bring themselves to your consciousness. Because of the signs involved, this needs to apply to a broad, humanitarian outlook on life -- rather than in a strictly romantic sense.
You may find circumstances in the next several weeks where a very altruistic kind of love and support can provide substantial benefit and growth to both you ... and the recipient.
The assertive, direct handling of money, possessions, and relationships from Venus in Aries can help demonstrate and strengthen some of your more theoretical beliefs and philosophical rules for living of Pluto in Sagittarius. You may see new ways to apply what you know (and what you believe) to the relationships and other people in your life. The results may teach you how to live a more integrated and honest lifestyle.
The changes you make in your thinking -- and your relationships -- over the next several weeks will be worthwhile, positive, constructive, and transforming for all concerned. It's a time when significant improvements are possible.
The same holds true with regard to money. The way you use money now to support your philosophy of life will reap rewards further down the road that have an almost "fated" quality, because of Pluto's connection to karmic agendas. Money used to further your education will be especially beneficial. (Realize, this doesn't have to happen on an academic level at all. "Education" comes in many guises. A book you buy, for instance, or a new subject of study that catches your fancy ... or just a new idea ... may make an important difference in your life's direction now.)
This is an easy, comfortable transit ... that might pass mostly unnoticed unless you know what to look for -- and what the significance might be.
In other news
Mercury in Pisces has also just formed a square with Pluto ... which indicates another fairly mild, and fast-moving influence, this one regarding knowledge, communication styles, and the use of force. This energy suggests a certain amount of prejudice, preachiness, or one-sided points of view may crop up in your thinking over the next few days. Also, the way you present your ideas may carry a little more push than usual.
Realize others are feeling the same way -- and if you don't agree with one another, neither side will be interested in finding a compromise, especially with these two "highly religious" signs involved. An overtly self-righteous tone ... or "moral arrogance" ... may show itself. You will feel very confident that you "know the right thing to do" ... based on feelings and issues of conscience -- so your patience with someone who has different ideas may be minimal. (And vice versa!)
