When Mercury Retrogrades in Aquarius

Mercury in Aquarius is a combination that invites you
to think better by thinking differently. You're willing to
consider ideas that once seemed to radical, too far-out, too extreme --
especially during the previous period when Mercury traveled through
ultra-cautious Capricorn ... a sign positively phobic about taking
unnecessary risks -- or trying anything new!
Mercury in Aquarius, however, loves ... content deleted ... This material and contemporary forecasts are available by subscription in our Premium Members site. Join our Astrology and Tarot Premium Membership today!!

Mercury Retrograde strikes early.
My ergonomic computer keyboard (the kind with the
split keyboard and special shape that lets you type at a more natural
angle than a regular keyboard) ... died yesterday morning. Minutes
ahead of getting yesterday's issue of Step by
Step out the door. Five keys on the left side just quit working
and could not be coaxed back into service.
I literally had to cut and paste single letters one
at a time to get the last few sentences / corrections to the document
made. And returning to a standard keyboard ... has also proved
challenging. Keys aren't where I expect them to be when I reach for
them. I hit the "Enter" key instead of the right Shift key, the Caps
Lock key instead of the A key. It's been ... different. (Frustrating
... distracting ... not "interesting" ... not "fun.") .") If you don't
think getting this document written was an exercise in supreme
patience (especially for me), try typing with mittens on and see how it
goes. That'll give you some idea.
So my usual lightning-fast typing speed has slowed
down to a whimpering limp. But things are improving. And I
shall overcome!!! Several pieces of mail are still waiting to be
written. If you've been looking to hear from me ... this is the hang up.
And if you don't hear from me and expect to in the next few days -- I
offer this as the probable reason why! Rest assured, I am running as
fast as I can. (Smile.)

The outlook today ...
The Moon begins the day in Scorpio.
The Moon is void of course in Scorpio until after 3 this afternoon (MT).
Even after it moves into Sagittarius, it forms no aspects until after 5
o'clock Friday morning (MT) ... and even that is a gloomy square to
Saturn. This is not apt to do my schedule (or yours) any good
whatsoever. So today and tomorrow ... remember that wise advice about
"Don't push the river" ... and take it to heart. Saturday and Sunday
both look much better. Guess where I've set my target. Go on ... guess.

The biggest human temptation is to settle for too
little.

A mood of passionate intensity and commitment to group goals
clashes for a time with a radical idea that requires more independence
than cooperation. Each of these agendas needs support. Each set of
strategies may aim to achieve something important. The trick is to
supply what you must provide "for the good of the group" while keeping
the independence of vision and intellect you need to support an
inspiration more suitable for you to pursue alone.

Venus in Capricorn trine Saturn in Virgo
Very Late January through Early February

Venus in Capricorn, has formed the departing
trine with Saturn,
now retrograde in Virgo.
The aspect formed at 7°.

See below
for glyph meanings.

The constructive focus and productivity of the recent Jupiter / Saturn
trine in these signs now adds "other people," the help partners can
bring and sensible financial management (through income opportunities
and wise spending choices) to the ventures you may put in motion soon.
Let's face it, you can never have too much solid help or too much
"capital" to invest in a new enterprise. So count your blessings as you
put the finishing touches on the first stage of your new schemes.

If you have Natal Chart placements near 7° of Taurus, Virgo,
Capricorn or Scorpio, this trine draws helpful people from one area of
your life -- to aid in the construction projects underway in another.
It's an arrangement whereby everybody wins ... so do welcome both your
own good sense and your partner's gifts of time, money, talent, work --
whatever they can best provide to help in your success. Details on this
are described by the symbolism of these transiting planets, your extra
Natal Chart placement, the signs involved, and the houses where all
these celestial citizens now reside.
Wherever this trine falls in your Natal Chart, helpful people, smart
purchases and financial opportunities arrive ready to go to work on
your behalf in the Natal Chart house which holds transiting Venus ...
and building (or in this case perhaps rebuilding, fortifying and
strengthening) continues in matters ruled by the Natal Chart house that
holds transiting Saturn.

The outlook today ...
The Moon is in Scorpio.
The Moon in willful Scorpio meets a wealth of creative energy today.
Listen for insights, useful information that arrives suddenly,
unexpectedly or "by accident." Your imagination is one of your best
assets. Keep it positive (despite temptations this evening to fret and
worry) ... and look carefully at the possibilities it suggests. Some of
them could be pure gold.

Go **** yourself.

AM:
Improvements in your home, family, and private life happen
easily now. Some unconventional decision ... or a change that "breaks
the rules" ... may bring you a lot more freedom. Don't be afraid to
act on your ideas, even the wacky ones. Some of them could be
positively inspired.
From 9:34 PM:
This strange,
disorienting energy can bring anything from radical visions of change
and "more freedom" in your life -- dreams that have virtually no chance
for a toehold in reality -- to bizarre, paranoid jealousies and sexual
fantasies. Emotional energy that under stress veers off into literal
"craziness" is not well served by the qualities available now, which
are known for extremes that can be brutal and shocking. It's time to
be quiet, stay calm, and wait for kinder currents to arrive.

Mercury Retrograde
January 28 through February 18
Well, Mercury has turned retrograde.
(Sigh) ... I know. I'm not ready for it either.
Here's the timetable you'll need to set your schedule.
It will be retrograde from now until February 18.
It will retrograde from 24° Aquarius to 8° Aquarius.
It will move out of its own shadow (go past the degree
at which it turned retrograde yesterday afternoon)
on March 10 ... and we get to make progress again.
It will leave Aquarius and enter Pisces on March 14.
It will retrograde again at the end of May in Gemini.

We seem to be getting a headstart on it tonight here
in the mountains of New Mexico. The wind has been howling and gusting
hard. The lights have dipped ominously several times -- which is why
What's in the Cards? got sent out early,
early, early -- while I still had power and connection to the server.
But everything else on the internet has been sluggish and slow
(!!) -- and taken about three times as long as it normally should
to do.
Anyway ... where your life is concerned for the next
three weeks, the house (or houses) in your Natal Chart that contain
8° - 24° of Aquarius are in for some serious rethinking,
reorganizing, and restructuring -- between now and mid-March. If you
have planets in your Natal Chart near these degrees in Aries, Gemini,
Libra, Sagittarius, or -- of course -- Aquarius (!!!), other areas of
your world will be affected as well -- probably with some very nice
improvements for your trouble as this retrograde ends and life moves
on.
This covers quite a spectrum of the Zodiac ... so
remember that promise about benefits and "better ideas" when Mercury
retrograde snarls trip you up over the next few weeks. (And they
probably will!!) Consider this Life's way of getting your attention,
asking what you're really trying to do with whatever went awry
... and come up with an alternative. There will be a better idea hidden
in this mix somewhere, whether you realize it or not. So look for it
like a pearl in an oyster ... and notice how what finally emerges from
the chaos really is better ultimately than your original
plans.
It took me years to reach this Zen-like patience with
Mercury's meanderings. You'll be ahead of the game, for sure, if you
take that wisdom to heart and hang on. ([Smile.] Remember, the best and
cheapest education you'll ever get is learning from other people's
mistakes. More folks should try it !!)
If you have Natal Chart placements near 8 - 24°
of Taurus, Scorpio, or Leo ... these episodes of new wisdom may not be
quite so smooth, but they will be memorable (and attention getting!!)
and the value will still be there -- when you stop gnashing your teeth
and swearing. (It's really not worth getting upset over.)

The chance to combine your assets with partner's assets -- and
create something impressive arrives. Find lucrative ways to apply all
this talent, wealth, and investment capital. It can fortify your home
base and practical foundations -- so you and loved ones are secure --
or move your professional pursuits in better directions -- so your
public stature shows you are truly a person of value. Be brave.
Tackle long-term projects and work that could take years to complete.
Remember, you don't have to do all the heavy lifting yourself. The
paths that open for you now show you that ... for sure!!
From 4:32 PM:
A passionate
desire to contribute your efforts and energy to a mutual investment
which could pay nice dividends to all concerned finds partners not only
cooperative, but able to add dimensions that make what you're creating
together more durable, more substantive, and more profitable, too!!
Talk about a moment where everybody wins!!
From 4:50 PM:
Your mood is
passionate, willful and secretive. Strong desires percolate beneath
the surface of a calm facade, but you're playing things very close to
the chest. There are openings for practical action ... and progress
... toward your goals, and while you're ready to grab them before they
disappear, you don't want anyone who could interfere to trip you up --
or get in your way.
From 9:46 PM:
Passionate
emotions feed professional ambitions ... and provide important fuel for
progress. Several other things can help: a realignment of partnership
assets, releasing some unproductive attitudes, adjusting conditions and
alliances -- within your home and family. Little changes can make a
big difference ... and right now, making them is nice and easy.
From 10:03 PM:
A project or
interest that takes considerable teamwork, the efforts of other people
... and your own irreplaceable contributions ... claims one part of
your attention now. The end result of this promises important benefits
for everyone in the group. But an equally passionate desire for
independence, the ability to call your own shots and do your own thing
without having to consider anybody, clouds your concentration
... and prevents your giving 100% to the work that sits in front of you
now.

Jupiter in Capricorn trine Saturn in Virgo
Late January through Late February

Jupiter, newly arrived in Capricorn,
has formed an ever-so-productive-and-practical
trine with Saturn
now retrograde in Virgo.
The aspect formed at 8°.

See below
for glyph meanings.

Well, now that some of the faster-moving stuff is out of the way, let's
talk about this one. Its influence is obviously going to stick around a
while. There's even better news, though. We get a month of its benefits
here at the start of the year ... but later this summer, once Jupiter
turns retrograde and Saturn goes direct, this trine will form again --
in early August, for all practical purposes -- and be around, handing
out benefits, encouragement, and support clear through the first of
next year. What a bonus!!

This is an incredibly productive combination -- and even
I can appreciate it -- despite all its emphasis in

once-in-a-lifetime combination -- and definitely not to be missed!!
The last time Saturn was in Virgo -- in 1979-80, Jupiter was as well ...
although the conjunction didn't form until both had moved into Libra.
This brought a powerful emphasis on building and growth to one sector
of life -- and you may have made impressive strides in one particular
area of interest during that time (or torn your hair out with
frustration if the conjunction was afflicted.)
In 1980, this conjunction that formed in Libra landed right on top of my
Natal Neptune, smack on my Midheaven. Neptune rules artistic interests,
occult studies, spiritual issues, seclusion, and inner work. The
Midheaven (10th House Cusp) rules career and public life pursuits. This
was the year I moved to my home deep in the mountains of New Mexico,
stopped "dabbling" with my writing -- and in this peaceful, lovely
place, began to develop those interests in earnest.
The previous Saturn in Virgo transit brought a trine with Jupiter in
Capricorn ... just like the one we're getting now. Only it was right at
Christmas, 1948. I was 21 months old ... and not in a position to make
much of the opportunity. In fact, looking at that chart -- and knowing
the history of what was happening on in my family then ... I can see
why it wasn't a terrific time for me for other reasons, too. But then I
have "earth sign issues" in my chart from the get-go. Anyway ... enough
with the stroll down Memory Lane.
The bottom line here is that for those of you who do just fine in the
presence of Earth Sign energy (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) ... and for
those of us who need it, Life is handing out a great opportunity this
year to

In other news ...
Mercury turns retrograde tomorrow afternoon, and Mars
goes direct on Wednesday. More about those, of course, will arrive next
week. The big buzz in the Astrology community online right now is over
Pluto's move into Capricorn late last Friday night. Some astrologers
whose work I honestly respect are all a-twitter over it. One has even
proclaimed grandly, YOUR LIFE IS GOING TO CHANGE THIS WEEK BIG TIME.
(Her capital letters ... not mine!) I hate to be a spoiler in the midst
of all this celebration, but honest ... you're not going to notice much
difference for a while.
Pluto travels through Capricorn for 16 years ... and
the changes it brings won't arrive for the most part with a wrenching
shudder. They'll play out gradually over the whole span ... so subtly
in some cases you'll need to get past the transit itself before you can
look back and see what all happened to you and what it means. Pluto
transits can bring experiences that are profound, dramatic, and
prolonged -- but rarely are they "suddenly" intense. You can usually
see and feel them coming from several miles away. (This doesn't mean at
all you can get off the train-tracks though. With Pluto, you can get to
experience the collision in slow-motion and with a fateful
inevitability that goes on and on and on.)
So as far as I'm concerned the current hubbub about
Pluto's "big changes" is premature and way over-the-top. In
fact, it will retrograde back into the last degree of Sagittarius late
this year for a while. I'll be a lot more excited about its prospects
once we get past that. And, yes, in the coming days I will most
definitely talk about the changes to expect as the next 16 years
unwind. Some of them could indeed be remarkable. But 16 years is a
long, long time. We can all afford to take it as it comes ... one day
after the other.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.
~ Bob Dylan ~

The outlook today ...
The Moon is in Libra.
The Moon in oh-so-sociable Libra travels an easy road today. A great day
to kick back, take life easy, and spend time with your Special Sweetie.
Work really can wait until Monday. And with the exception of
some possible small-potatoes problems on Thursday, the scenery clear
through 'til then looks mighty fine! Stay safe ... and enjoy the view.

To talk well and eloquently is a very great art,
but an equally great one is to know the right moment to stop.
