Mars in Cancer opposing Pluto in Capricorn
September 2007 - April 2008

Mars in Cancer and Pluto in Capricorn have formed the third and final opposition for this cycle, now that Mars is out of retrograde and moving forward -- and eventually out of harm's way -- at long last. It's not yet time to start the celebrations ... but we can certainly anticipate that happy moment, coming up now sooner rather than later. This opposition formed at 1°.

Well, this is definitely one of those good-news / bad-news situations. We've been coping cautiously (and otherwise!) with this wretched combination since last September -- which, believe me, is a long time to be holding your breath and watching your step!! The good news is, we're finally going to get away from this rotten rascal in a few weeks now.

With Mars having gone into retrograde at this point this cycle, we've had our usual three-bites-of-this-sour-apple ... the third of which was exact last Friday -- so from this point, the pattern in the sky will unlock, weaken ... and the celestial citizens will go on about their business instead of wishing one another all sorts of dire harm.

The bad news is ... things may get temporarily worse before they get better. The third transit of a triple-pass often brings matters to a serious crisis point, and all the tensions you've tried carefully to contain (in this case for months!!) can break out with a vengeance at the slightest misstep.

Globally, terrorist incidents and bombings have escalated lately. Nationally we've had yet another mall-shooting. Locally, there has been an increase in fires, explosions, swat-team emergencies and police stand-offs. There may be more I haven't mentioned. I've had to stay away from the news for a while, as a couple of sad incidents much closer to home have pulled at my attention the last few weeks. I will, indeed, be glad to see the end of this one.

This time around the opposition formed in different signs -- Mars now in Cancer, Pluto in Capricorn -- signifying something "more personal" than the serious philosophical clash we've experienced several times since Pluto moved into Sagittarius for an extended stay in the autumn of 1996.

Trouble is, just one side of the conflict knowing this (and trying to behave) isn't nearly enough. When life's problems and life's people are this aggravated and angry, things like reason and compromise don't stand much of a chance. And we're going to have to cope with the most dangerous time in this cocked-and-ready-to-fire combination for a few weeks still. No kidding, it's still very necessary to act and react with caution. This is a cosmic standoff with both combatants armed to the teeth and in a very mean mood.

Violent crimes rise during this aspect ... and are especially ugly and senseless. People drive too fast, push too hard, take stupid chances, get involved in "ego issues," and seem to be looking for a "target" at which to aim their general ire. Accidents and deliberate "acts intended to deliver a message" involving fire, explosions, and weapons really grab one's attention. Little fights can escalate into real tragedy. Careless gestures can have unexpected, unintended consequences.

I don't plan to really breathe easy on this one until the end of April -- because as I've said before the incidents (and repercussions) forecast by transiting planetary aspects can take a while to appear "in real life" ... so avoiding any kind of confrontation that could provoke an "extreme" response, is still, believe me, a wise choice.

This can be a dangerous force to cope with ... because sometimes the individual is right, and it's society that needs adjustment -- but clearly it takes a lot of force to do that. (In a Natal Chart, it can be hard to say whether the individual is being realigned on his own spiritual path by the greater forces of society around him ... or whether his spiritual mission is to make society change -- by being such a pain the behind. Clearly some of our most outstanding social activists and leaders have such an agenda as part of their Karma. Albert Schweitzer, for instance, had this opposition in his Natal Chart.)

So, this coming decade will have our attention for many reasons -- not the least of which is the fact that the United States is a "Cancer country" ... July 4, 1776, remember? The Natal Chart of our country has four planets in Cancer (Venus, Jupiter, The Sun, and Mercury), and Natal Pluto in Capricorn opposes Natal Mercury in the chart of the country. This opposition from Pluto in Capricorn will indeed "get personal" in the years ahead, as our ability to "dictate terms" to the rest of the world -- which has been used and abused in the years since WW II delivers Karma to our doorstep that has been building since the early 1930's ... and arguably from 20 years earlier.

If you have Natal Chart placements near (29 - 0°) the cusp of Gemini / Cancer, Virgo / Libra, Sagittarius / Capricorn, or Pisces / Aries, this opposition could rattle several areas of your life ... with changes that are undeniably dramatic. Placements near 29° of Aries (0° Taurus), Leo (0° Virgo), Libra (0° Scorpio), or Aquarius (0° Pisces) give you some natural help dealing with this tension, but it still bears careful watching. Further details on this, of course, are described by the symbolism of these transiting planets, your extra Natal Chart placement, the signs involved, and the houses where all these celestial citizens now reside.
