My Sam-light

Sam has discovered his voice. My three-year-old bundle of energy has also realized how very fun it is to be really friendly.

His solution?

Greet everything with overwhelmingly astonishing energy.

We walk down the street and Sam cries out and waves, "Hi sprinklers on!" "Hi light!" "Hi truck!" "Hi!" The "Hi" without a label is reserved for other humans along the path unless he happens to know the name of that particular human.

I decided I was going to be brave and take my first walk without my beloved dog Sandy, since he is no longer with us on the physical plane. I didn't want to go alone, so I waited for a good opportunity to hit the streets pushing Samuel in his stroller.

We worked our way towards the bluffs " my favorite spot with Sandy where we would watch the bunnies and salamanders and other dogs and humans with reckless abandon. Sandy was my partner in the "I Can Run and I Can Sing" campaign as we huffed and puffed and moved energy. I had a vision of my sneakers hitting the dirt path and realized the stroller wouldn't work on that surface.

Instead, Sam and I walked around a less traveled by Sandy and me route and I knew it was perfect for this moment that we didn't go on an identical "Sandy and Mommy" path.

Tonight I discovered Sam knows that letters create words which name things. We passed the sign for Bright Beginnings Preschool. Sam called out, "Hi, Name!" We walked past a house with an Alarm Company Sign, "Hi, Name!" If there was water coursing down the curb from all the "Hi Sprinkler On!" Sam would also greet "Hi, Water!"

Sam made everything so simple, so passion filled, so clear and crisp and calm.

He added his special brand of "Sam-light" to my early evening.

I could have missed it if I became frustrated to not be able to go on a more usual for me Sandy style walk. I could have missed it if I got embaressed by his unconventional pronunciation. I could have missed it if I didn't echo back his discoveries, word for word and inflection for inflection.

What is your special "You-light?"
