The Barstow to Bakersfield Miracle

A miracle occurred somewhere on State Highway 58 between Barstow and Bakersfield.

I had a target: to get home before a television program Emma really wanted to see. After all, she lamented "If we are not home by eight o'clock I will be the only child in the United States not to see this show!"

Yes, I know, she was exaggerating ... slightly. I realized we would make it just in time if I didn't make a pit stop in Boron or Mojave or Tehachapi. I also noticed I was looking forward to arriving home.

Home in Bakersfield.

I wanted to be home in Bakersfield.

I had spent time the previous day in the Grand Canyon. The day before was a holiday which I spent with my extended family, discussing poetry and politics and the arts and car racing.

Lots of love and natural beauty and laughter and I could not wait to get into my snug as a bug home in Bakersfield.

It might sound odd, but this was a monumental moment. In the past as I have gotten closer to Bakersfield my heart began to get heavy, full of lead laden dread. It was in the still darkness of my quiet van that I realized a miracle had happened.

Albert Einstein said, "There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle."
