Gently Spreading Warmth

It feels like being stuck in the middle of an ice cube or swimming in a deep vat of jello, so low in the vat that every once in a while your belly skims the bottom reminding you exactly how low the moment sits.

I looked across the darkened oil fields a short distance from my home. The hands on my watch continued to move. My heart continued to beat as the winds from the arctic tundra blew across it.

I sat in my van waiting for the teleconference to begin. The area was too noisy for crickets and too quiet to stifle the sounds of my crying. My heart cradled and rocked me, reminding me it is ok to feel hurt.

It is ok to feel wounded.

It is normal to be disappointed in myself on occasion.

So I sat and participated in the teleconference and drove home, still numb.

I know many quick fixes which would pull me out of the feeling. I could easily peer into my bag of tricks and in a moment have a smile brighter than a Stepford Wife.

I had the sense, however, that what I really needed was to simply and patiently sit by the fireplace and allow myself and the pain time to thaw in a gentle, slower framework.

In this way, I know I will feel better for the long run and I will stand in truth throughout the journey. I know the pain will be processed instead of denied and I will be restored sooner than I might imagine.

I feel warmth spreading on my inside and on my outside, gracefully reaching out to others with that same level of clarity and intensity.
