It's amazing how easy it is to convince ourselves that we're in control of everything in our lives. When it comes right down to it, what we eventually learn is that we are in control of only two things: our own thoughts, and our own actions.

We can fool ourselves into thinking that we can control our spouses, children, friends, employers, etc. But are we really in control? We can plot, manipulate, connive and cajole in order to get our own way, but ultimately the other person makes their own decision. We didn't force anything to happen. We may have encouraged it, but we didn't cause it.

Anger is not an emotion. When we are angry, we are attacking. We only attack someone if we're scared. The emotion under anger is fear. Anger itself is our attack so we can be safe. So, someone is angry, frustrated, irritated, or annoyed with you. Why? Aren't you a safe person to be with?

Remember, their anger means they are scared. With coworkers, kids or partners, their anger is not about you. It's about their fears. Don't get defensive. Just agree that they have the right to feel what they are feeling. Listen. Really listen. In an amazingly short time, they will be talking about their fears. Then you'll have truly proven that you are safe to be with, and given them an opportunity to experience what working through their anger is like. They'll remember it. And they'll want more.

I'm going to jump right into this controversy because it keeps coming up in my coaching practice. My specialty is Emotional Intelligence. I don't think we're combatant as much as confused.

If you suffer from depression can you "treat it" with Emotional Intelligence, exercise, diet, and willpower?

The answer to that question is "it depends." My understanding of depression is that you don't "have it" -- which makes us think it's the result of a loss, or betrayal, or sad feelings, but that you "suffer from it" -- it's a lack of serotonin, the "feel good" chemical. Either we aren't manufacturing enough serotonin, or are not able to utilize what we have.

If it's midwinter in the Northeast, gardening wouldn't be very appealing (you might consider some interior work like stripping wallpaper and redecorating the guestroom). Maybe coffee keeps you awake at night, even decaffeinated coffee! So that's not a good choice. You eliminate several options just because of the current circumstances; that's why it's a good idea to have a lot of them.

Finally, one option sticks. It feels just right. That's the one you are really willing to do, and do properly. That's the one that is most likely to bring you fascinated second glances when you show up at your reunion looking even more attractive than you did 20 years ago. The attraction could be the weight or it could be the inner knowing that you have the power to create what you really want for yourself. That's attractive!

(Seasonal Affective Disorder)

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects about 5% of us severely and perhaps 25% of us more mildly. Women and young adults are more likely to suffer from it. It's a form of depression that, according to the National Mental Health Association (NMHA), is a real illness with sometimes severe symptoms. It's worse in January and February, though starts as early as September.

SAD is believed to be caused by melatonin, a sleep-related hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin production increases in the dark, so in the winter, when the days are shorter and darker, production increases, causing symptoms of depression. SAD is extremely rare for people living within 30 degrees of the Equator, where daylight hours are long and extremely bright.

The best way I describe not being grounded, in relation to food, are my bouts with binge eating and bulimia. I never focused on what I was eating. It was more about what I would eat next. One thing after another was consumed before I had time to even think about what I was swallowing. During those times, there never was an "Earth to Catherine" moment.

My friend who retired last year from years on Wall Street tells me, "I have to watch very carefully how I spend my money. I don't know how to do anything."

One of the reasons people find retirement challenging, is also the solution to the problem of better aging: we identify with roles in our lives. Worse than that, we enjoy them. They're what our life is all about or we wouldn't have been doing them in the first place.

It was the Swine Flu of its day here in the American Southwest a number of years back ... a deadly respiratory ailment -- with initial symptoms that started out similar to the flu but which quickly progressed to a stage where the lungs of a victim filled with straw-colored fluid ... and from there often caused death.

It seemed to arrive out of nowhere and also seemed terrifyingly confined to this area of the country. New Mexico and the Four Corners region were Ground Zero with a major outbreak in 1993 ... and this state was swarming with CDC workers looking to isolate the cause and identify the transmission agents.
