The Magic of Rainbows

Rainbows hold a special place in the folklore and legends of many cultures. To the Celts and modern day Irish, the rainbow is a symbol of prosperity and happiness, and of course, the people themselves tell a timeless tale of a leprechaun with his pot of gold waiting at the rainbow's end for anyone lucky enough to find it. (Talk about having to be in the right place at the right time!!) And yet, as with all lotteries, it's the sort of dream that could come true.

To the ancient Greeks, the rainbow was the visible symbol if the goddess Iris. It represented the bridge between life and death. Its beauty was a reminder that the end of life itself is a happy homecoming.

For the Christians, of course, the rainbow was the symbol set in the sky by God after The Great Flood ... a visible reminder of His promise that He would never again destroy the Earth by water. And so the rainbow, boosted perhaps by its own breath-taking beauty, has become associated through time with life, joy, abundance, immortality and a kind of divine protection.

When they appear, they are beautiful, breath-taking, fragile -- and extremely short-lived. Conditions require that there be enough water vapor in the air and that the angle of sunlight be just right. It's a sight to enjoy while it lasts -- because truly, it won't last long.

To anyone blessed with the sight of one, it's a good omen -- a lovely surprise, like a benediction after the rain. The magnificent splendor of rainbows all but beg for their special moment of silence, acknowledgment, gratitude, and use -- just as the sight of the Evening Star prompts us to make wishes -- "Star light, star bright" -- and send them winging their way toward heaven. In fact, the appearance of a rainbow feels like something blessed with special magic, ready to hear a whispered prayer for balance, abundance, right choices, and safe passage for yourself and others between this world and the next.

It only takes a moment (and with ephemeral rainbows that may be all the time you have), to pause, admire the bright brilliance, fill your heart with gratitude for the sight, and speak a few words of affirmation or blessing for whatever is also in your heart. Is there really any doubt that when a rainbow appears, Spirit, too, is close by -- enjoying the show along with you and especially willing to listen to whatever you have to say?
