Mercury has finally formed its opposition to Pluto, as the last of the Gemini planets to make its way across this treacherous landscape. This marks a time when people express their opinions forcefully -- to say the least. It's also a time when ideas may arouse powerful opposition, or when response to new knowledge or information is intense.
There is often a heavy need for changes as a result of what you now know or will learn in the next few weeks. Thus this is a time of revolutionary insights ... and ideas that can transform your life's direction.
Coming as it does after the most recent Mercury retrograde period, when you were rethinking some of your life's concepts and redesigning some of your intellectual foundations (depending on where Mercury retrograded in your chart), and with the powerful New Moon in Gemini that recently occurred near this position -- this aspect may be especially significant.
To just briefly recap information we've presented at great length earlier, both here, and in features on the site:
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Aries: You are changing the way you think ... and the way you communicate ... the way you use knowledge and information ... because of influences and changes that are occurring in your whole "philosophy of life."
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Taurus: You are changing your abstract personal values ... and the way you think about and use money ... because of influences and changes that are occurring in your area of jointly held resources, mutual investments, community property, matters of teamwork, and involvement with "other people's assets." This may be in response to an emergency, crisis, permanent change, or "ending" of some sort.
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Gemini: You are changing the way you present your ideas, the way you reveal who you are and what you think, even the way you approach the world intellectually ... because of powerful changes that are occurring in a partnership or close association, possibly within your marriage. "Other people" are somehow causing you to change the way you think and the way you present those thoughts.
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Cancer: You are changing the way you use your intellectual gifts in matters that involve research, mystical interests, psychological learning, artistic enterprises, and therapeutic healing efforts ... because of influences and changes that are occurring in your area of work and service to others. There may be some kind of "health issue" also involved in this shift.
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Leo: You are changing the way you think about your goals for the future, the hopes and dreams to which you aspire, and your ideals and humanitarian efforts ... because of influences and changes in the way you present your creative talents -- the tactics you use to showcase "who you are" in ways that can have a powerful impact on the "audience" around you.
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Virgo: You are changing the way you think about your professional image, your career directions, and the way you present your ideas in your public role ... because of influences and changes occurring at home -- things that possibly involve your physical dwelling, adjustments in your private life, with the members of your family circle, or in your own psychological "foundations and roots."
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Libra: You are changing the way you apply your "rules for living," the philosophical and religious "laws you live by," and the way you teach others what you know with the example of your own choices ... because of influences and changes in what you know and believe to be true about the world. You are beginning to use your mind and its gifts in an entirely different way.
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Scorpio: You are changing the way you think about the use of other people's assets, talents, possessions, resources, and the benefits they can bring to a partnership effort dear to your heart. You may see ways in which their "wealth and capital" can be applied to improved conditions for everyone using your ideas, vision, contributions, and abilities as part of the mix. This may involve some kind of greatly altered or transformed situation within your own financial arrangements, personal values, or physical support structures.
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Sagittarius: You are changing the way you think about partnerships, the kinds of information and knowledge you use that involves the input of other people, the way you present your ideas to other people and take their viewpoints and opinions into account ... because of extraordinary changes taking place in your sense of who you are and what you intend to accomplish in the world.
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Capricorn: You are changing the way you think about work matters, the kind of service you provide -- mostly for the benefit of others, and the impact some of your old habits and ideas have had on your lifestyle and physical health ... because of radical changes taking place in the area of your subconscious mind, changes that may not make their way out into conscious awareness -- and thus may seem "invisible," but which will change the way you present yourself overall in the future.
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Aquarius: You are changing your intellectual enjoyments, your often highly cerebral hobbies or "things you love to do", and the way you use your mind to convey "who you are and what you think" in ways specifically designed to bring attention to you and your abilities ... because of influences and changes in your overall goals for the future, the "larger vision of life" you have recently acquired, and the hopes and dreams you are taking on as part of what you want to accomplish to "create a better world."
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is in Pisces: You are changing the ideas you use to construct your private life, the way you communicate and share information with family members, the way you think about the concept of "family" and "who you are as a member of a family", and possibly -- symbolically -- the kind of physical dwelling you want to have or the way you want to rearrange circumstances in your home to better support some of these new ideas ... because of changes in the professional direction you want to follow, the public roles you want to assume, and the kind of person you want to be in the eyes of the world.
These latest changes will make themselves more visible over the next several weeks ... and are increments of a much larger overall process of transition and improvement in which the themes I have described are fundamental. They are part of a life-altering transformation that has been underway for about seven years now ... and will continue for about another seven years.
Because this aspect forms once a year ... there will obviously be about seven more such times of "course correction" and adjustment as these subjects evolve and create the new arrangements you will need in your life -- in these specific areas of attention -- before moving on to the next set of concerns you will handle in this same manner of long-term learning and education.
Mystics talk about "changing your life by changing your mind." What I am describing here makes this time one of the most significant parts of this process -- for everyone. This is how the world -- and humankind -- evolve ... because we all start to think about it -- and ourselves -- differently. This instance, however, is particularly important. Knowledge and what we do with it have recently begun to assume special significance -- possibly because once you know something, you then have a responsibility to act on that knowledge, or at least use it wisely.
One further note: The configuration of Mercury opposing Pluto ... with Venus making a sextile to Mercury and a trine to Pluto is a rather unusual alignment which astrologers refer to as a "mediated opposition." In this, the tensions of the opposition itself ... the Mercury / Pluto confrontation I've just described ... can use the energies and symbolism of the planet which forms the benevolent aspects to each of the antagonists, to help "mediate" their difference of opinion or achieve a compromise that can help each get what it wants in the way of "victory" from this conflict.
In this case, that planet, obviously, is Venus -- the symbol of the way you conduct relationships and the way you deal with money.
Thus, the new partnership arrangements ... and the new ways of working with money and your personal values ... which I described in the beginning of this document, can help produce significant benefits from this "new way of thinking." Your more positive ways of relating to partners and your more positive ways of using wealth to support "what you value" can make this tension less difficult -- and create advantages in the areas of current conflict far beyond what you may expect at the moment.

What Does Mercury Represent in Your Natal Chart? -- What is it ... and why is it important? ---> In mythology, Mercury was the winged messenger of the Gods. -- Your mind -- at work and play -- In Astrology, Mercury represents your conscious, rational mind. It tells a lot about your intellectual self; your ability to study, learn, analyze, communicate and work with information.
Mercury in General -- Your Inner Selves of Learning and Work ---> Learning stuff, using your mind and putting it to work -- Like Venus, your Mercury energy describes two inner selves. One manages your mind and all its talents; the other is in charge of the work you do ... the ways you use your skills and abilities to help others and build the kind of life your want for yourself. Again, as with Venus, these are usually reduced to the basic categories of "mind" and "work," but they also include whole subdivisions of behavior and talents.
Mercury and the Miracle of the Mind -- Astrology's Search for Intelligent Life ---> As an Astrologer I see both the mundaneness of common knowledge -- handling the basic facts of awareness and everyday rituals -- and a touch of miracles in Mercury.
Mercury Retrograde -- Rethinking Your Present Direction ---> In the territory of the mind -- When Mercury is retrograde (Mercury Rx -- in shorthand), it is a time of rethinking, refocusing and re-communicating. In Astrology, Mercury represents your intellect; your mental focus; your mind and how you use its assets.
Pluto Retrograde -- Rebuilding in the Wake of Revolution ---> Pluto -- death and resurrection -- Pluto. If you know anything at all about the symbolism of this strange, erratic, controversial planet (which some scientists don't consider a planet at all, and other scientists consider part of a double planet set along with its own Moon, Charon, with whom it shares an atmosphere), you know it represents situations and experiences that deserve more than passing respect.
Pluto Retrograde in Capricorn -- Originally written April 2009 ---> The long relentless break-down -- Transiting Pluto -- both direct and retrograde -- depicts the loooooong-term process of tearing down and improving things that are worn out, exhausted, inappropriate, obsolete, ineffective and falling into ruin.
Pluto -- The Symbol of Irresistible Change ---> When things change ... drastically -- Pluto. If the idea of this planet and all its metaphorical meanings, all the things it symbolizes out in the real world, don't cause the hair to ripple on the back of your neck and an inward shudder to pass through the core of your body like a sudden gust of frigid wind, well, then you don't know it like I do.
Pluto: Ruler of Scorpio -- Symbol of Your Transformative, Regenerative Self ---> Pluto, with its bizarre, irregular orbit, is the last of the discovered planets in this Solar System which the basic metaphorical language of astrology contains. Occasionally it is the outermost of the known planets, although during part of its journey around the Sun it moves inside the orbit of Neptune.
Pluto in Capricorn -- The Lord of Destruction and Rebirth -- in the sign of Government and Corporate Industry ---> With Pluto in Capricorn, you are working with an energy that is -- Fueled by a profound desire to make sweeping changes and improvements -- now tackling long-term projects that involve reworking your life's fundamental structures -- Determined to demolish what is exhausted, inappropriate, useless, obsolete or in disrepair in life areas where you already feel constantly vulnerable and insecure -- and replace these broken investments with new arrangements that will boost your self-esteem and status, provide far more protection and future security.
