An eclipse -- why it happens
In ancient times, eclipses were viewed with fear and wariness -- since they were imperfectly understood. But even today, when we fully understand the cause of eclipses ... and can predict their appearances years in advance, there's still a definite ambivalence -- even among astrologers -- about this peculiar, visually stunning astronomical phenomenon.
From a strictly astrological viewpoint, a Solar Eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon occupy the same degree of a Zodiac sign and are positioned in the sky so that the Moon blocks the Sun from view ... either fully or partially. Thus, Solar Eclipses can only occur during a New Moon. A Lunar Eclipse, on the other hand, occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon in a position to throw its own shadow against the Moon. Lunar Eclipses can only occur during a Full Moon.
The New Moon, called a Lunation by astrologers occurs, when the Sun and Moon occupy the same sign, degree, and minute of arc in the Zodiac. Thus a New Moon, the conjunction of Sun and Moon in the same sign, occurs at specific degree and minute of that sign ... which then becomes important determining in the angles it forms with other planets in the sky at the time ... and with the planet placements in a person's Natal Chart.
A Lunation always bring extra focus to the interests of the sign where it occurs and emphasis to the concerns of the House of a person's Natal Chart which contains that particular degree of the Zodiac. This spotlight on these life areas will continue until the next New Moon forms, moving the point of emphasis elsewhere.

When it's special
Personal and psychological issues raised by the Full Moon in one pairing may continue for the next six months until the New Moon forms in the sign of The Moon ... and when an eclipse is involved, those matters can become fairly urgent and intense. The energy of an eclipse definitely points to a life area that is up for special review.
If the Lunation point forms angles with a person's Natal Planets, that month will be especially significant in the person's life. True it may take some time, distance and perspective to appreciate the "results" that derive from experiences, events, and choices that occur during this time. But regardless, the matters of the House itself will always receive extra attention.
If the Lunation forms angles ... known as aspects ... with either other planets in the sky or with planets in a person's Natal Chart, those planets and angles then color the emotional tone of the month and often predict either issues or events the person will meet and work with in his life as the month progresses.
If the New Moon coincides with a Solar eclipse and the lunation / eclipse point degrees form close aspects with Natal placements in a person's chart ... this tone and these concerns seem to linger well past the next lunation, and hang around until at least the next Solar Eclipse. And, yes, if we're dealing instead with a Full Moon / Lunar Eclipse ... this rule-of-thumb still applies with regard to duration and timing.
