The New Moon

New Moons are special -- from the energy that accompanies them, to their spiritual & symbolic meaning, to its visual appearance. That last is kind of tongue-in-cheek. The New Moon forms when the Moon & Sun align in the sky, in the same degree & minute of arc of the Zodiac.. Or, as astronomers phrase it, when the Sun & Moon have the same ecliptic longitude. (When the Sun, Moon & Earth line up on the Plane of the Ecliptic.)

The irony part is that at the moment of the New Moon every month, the night sky is totally dark except for the stars. The Moon is nowhere to be seen. Aligned with the Sun, in the daytime it's lost in the glare, & of course, at night, the Sun is on the other side of the world.

Meanwhile, the side of the Moon that faces Earth is completely in shadow, while the Dark Side of the Moon -- which we never see from our vantage point, is "full," receiving all the available sunlight. That's the New Moon. That's what happens. And about 24 - 36 hours after this, the thinnest edge of moonlight will appear in the curve of the brand New Moon visible just after sunset, gracing the twilight.

Some argue this is the first visible light of the new Crescent Moon. Not even astronomers / astrologers can agree on the terms. I let them squabble. My standards feel valid to me. So -- here they are. The Dark of the Moon begins when the Moon enters the 12th Solar House -- 30° behind the Sun every month. It overlaps with the Balsamic Moon & New Moon.

The Dark Moon remains until that sliver of light appears. That varies -- again, anywhere from 24 - 36 hours.

The New Moon

The New Moon forms once a month, when the Moon's orbit brings it into exact alignment in the sky with the Sun. This puts the Moon between the Earth and the Sun ... which is precisely the arrangement needed for a Solar Eclipse. Solar Eclipses only happen around the time of the New Moon ... but there are reasons why we get a New Moon during every Zodiac sign, but not a Solar Eclipse on the same schedule.

For a Solar Eclipse to occur, the Earth, Moon and Sun have to be perfectly aligned on the same plane so that the Moon passes directly in from of the Sun, blocking it (or most of it) from view for a while. When this alignment is close but not perfect, we get partial (rather than total) Solar Eclipses. And when the Moon's orbital plane takes it too far above or below the Sun for the blockage to occur ... we get nothing.

Well, that's not strictly true. We do get the New Moon ... right on schedule, but it's not visually impressive at all. When the Moon is in that position relative to the Sun, it crosses the sky along with the Sun, but so close that it's lost in the Sun's glare. Thus it's impossible to see the Moon at that point, despite the fact that it's still up there ... traveling along, doing its thing.

And as it hurries along, and that perfect alignment slowly degrades ... a little more every hour, every day subsequent to the New Moon ... we begin to see it again ... reflecting the sunlight that makes the Moon seem to give off a light of its own. It doesn't, of course, but that's what makes it visible again.

From the Blogs, Ezines and Elsewhere

From EDA: The Sun ---> Everyday Astrology ---> March 15, 2020 ---> The Sun ---> Just as the Sun is the physical center of our Solar System, so the Sun in Astrology is the center of attention in a horoscope. It provides a starting point for an Astrologer to begin interpreting the essential qualities of a person's character or a situation -- whatever that particular chart happens to examine. The pivotal energy of a person or event starts there -- with the Sun's sign & location.

From EDA: The Sun and The Moon ---> Everyday Astrology ---> March 30, 2020 Sun & Moon ---> The Sun in your horoscope represents your Essential Self, the inner part of your character that defines your personality and ego. It is your basic identity to the world as your life unfolds. Arguably it also describes your spiritual purpose ... your sense of who you are and who you are meant to become. It is your present self reaching into the future as you develop your potential and talents.
