The Full Moon

Every month you get a chance to make a new beginning, a fresh start, another round of learning on a cluster of interests that are part of building a complete, fully-functional life. This aligns with the work of the New Moon every month, & since the Moon is the horoscope's fastest moving component -- things change constantly here ... day to day, week to week. You can call it "moods," but it's really "focus."

Anyway ... the Sun's progress through the Zodiac signs every year sets an agenda that changes from month to month. And as the Moon catches up -- racing through all twelve signs every month, you get a doubling-down on the "theme of the month" when the Moon lines up with the Sun. This is the New Moon. It's the very definition of commitment -- the union of self & ambition with desires & emotions.

The Full Moon

The Earth orbits the Sun. The Moon orbits the Earth. The visual echo -- the relationship of these two facts -- gives us the familiar spectacle of moon phases. In certain positions, the Moon is dark because it's unable to reflect sunlight -- & it has no light of its own. In other positions the Moon appears in certain shapes. And two weeks after each New Moon every month, the Full Moon rises, gracing the sky in all its glory.

The Full Moon forms when the Sun & Moon literally oppose one another with the Earth sandwiched in between. As one sets on the Western horizon, the other rises in the East. It's the eternal dance of the Luminaries -- a celestial display that began long before humans arrived & it continues to this day.

The Full Moon

So, does the Full Moon really affect human behavior & psychology? Does anything in the real world change when the Sun & Moon face off against each other? Are the attitudes & actions common during the full moon every month really the foundation for the word & concept of "lunacy?" Is the time-honored connection between lunar & lunatic just an ancient misunderstanding?

To be charitable, let's say the jury is out on that question. There are supposedly "scientific" papers that say no, it's a myth. Just an old wives' tale; nothing to it. But personal experience, legend & folklore say otherwise. Usually, there's something to that, something to at least keep in mind.

The Full Moon

As the bumper-stickers say, "Stuff happens." Stuff happens a lot when there's a Full Moon around. Sometimes there are problems that have built up slowly over time. Sometimes one stark event brings it home that you're uncomfortable & you've got to make some choices. You feel pulled in two (or three or four) different directions. Your inner & outer worlds aren't getting along -- & it's become a problem.

The clarity you get from Astrology can be immensely helpful if you notice where the stresses are & whether the theme of a Full Moon event sheds light on what's happening with you. Full Moons span the circle of the horoscope -- & provide a visual display you can readily see in the evening or early morning sky. As the Sun sets, the Moon rises ... & as the Sun rises, the Moon sets -- each on its own far horizon.

The Full Moon

The Full Moon every month is a peak of cosmic energy, the high point of both illumination from the physical satellite & the height of contradiction from the energy. Astrology views this connection as the collision of opposites who must somehow reconcile their competing interests & other differences. The Full Moon is about choices, but since many don't realize this, all they feel is the tension.

The stress of a Full Moon is notorious. Under the Full Moon, those not conscious of these higher patterns & the need to reflect consciously on their lives & choices feel pressured, cranky & pulled in too many directions at once. Sometimes they act out. Sometimes they just "get through it somehow" & move on, despite not having learned much, & let the memory fade into oblivion

The Harvest Moon

Every few years we get a year with 13 Full Moons in a year instead of 12. The same happens with a New Moon, but I won't get into that now. It depends on when the artificial human calendar (and its arbitrary, arcane idea of "months") synchs up with the actual, ongoing, eternal celestial rhythms. When either happens, one event comes very near the beginning of the month and the other very near the end.

A Full Moon happens every 29.5 days. (And again, the same with a New Moon) So every year you have 11 days "left over" -- which shift the next year's Moon dates forward or backward. (Don't worry about it. It's just "interesting" ... and sometimes inconvenient. And sometimes seems strangely symbolic. Even spooky. Such as when this year's Full Moons -- given that it's 2020, and all -- happen in October.)

So -- we get a Harvest Moon on October 1. And a Blue Moon on Halloween. (As I said. Spooky. But a Full Moon on Halloween. You have to love it. Or at least admit your Inner Kid thinks that's cool & terrific.) The Harvest Moon is the name given the Full Moon that forms closest to the Autumnal Equinox -- the Libra Ingress ... the day the Sun moves into Libra, when day & night are equal in length.

(From there, of course, in the Northern Hemisphere, we get shorter days & longer nights. In the Southern Hemisphere, just the opposite. We're moving into winter. They're moving into "summer." I don't know how they actually designate it. I should ask.)

The Harvest Moon often comes in September. Its name comes from when farmers were able to harvest their crops by moonlight. The moon will appear full for 3 - 4 days. Enjoy it!!

The Full Moon

New Moons are about starting new things -- new projects, new commitments, new interests. The New Moon in Gemini, wherever it falls in the sign, is about using your mind to explore your world, to explore your life, to find your place in both and understand them all differently. The Full Moon in Sagittarius opposing the Gemini Sun is actually able to help that happen by providing context to what's going on.

Full Moons in general are about inner exploration and reflection. They are times when you become aware of options, conflicts and choices. They also help you become aware of your priorities and your likely need to rebalance some. It's this conflict, this discomfort that makes Full Moons so notoriously problematic.

The Full Moon

The Full Text
('Cause I'm in THAT kind of a mood.)

Whenever the Full Moon rolls around, I write a segment here -- or somewhere -- about "choices." That's its message. Conflicts. Opposing priorities. Split loyalties. Decisions. Regaining balance. Making choices. None are as clear & stark as the one facing us now -- as a nation ... as a planet.

Continue to nurture, protect yourself, care for your loved ones, conserve your assets & use your resources wisely, stay the course and deal with the physicality of Life -- all of them basic concerns for the Sun in Taurus ---> or risk death, complete destruction, total revolution, chaos & dire conditions, annihilation -- all of these are the basic concerns for the Moon in Scorpio. So here we are. The wording is sometimes a lot simpler.

Your money -- or your life. Dig in -- or die. And for some, that's literally what they're facing -- whether they can admit it or not. That choice. Maybe they can go back to work and not get sick ... not die. But it's a gamble. There are no guarantees. Your wealth, welfare and physical assets versus The Economy. -- the shared wealth, the investments you make with others, the "greater good." Or is it?

A country that cannot safely sustain itself through even this comparatively tiny amount of time and keep its citizens safe in the face of this monumental crisis ... needs to make some serious choices -- and without a doubt, some different ones. Life and death is as serious as it gets. And to demand (as "our leaders" are) that people place themselves in this kind of jeopardy for the sake of money is appalling.

This attitude is unconscionable. Maybe The Economy is the problem. Maybe the concept of MONEY ITSELF is the problem. Time for different choices. Srsly.

The Full Moon

Full Moons present choices. They highlight conflicts & prompt you to make decisions to bring two competing areas of life back into balance. There's really no right answer to handling such a request from a Full Moon with its different priorities & values. But it does encourage you to take conscious stock of your situation & decide whether it's appropriate to your needs ... whether it actually suits you.

It's actually a friendly, gentle reminder from the Cosmos, noting that just living is complicated & things can become lopsided & unfair before we even realize it. Situations like that make life harder than it has to be -- & right now, nobody needs that. (Well, we don't ever really need that, but let's be realistic. It happens. Let's just stay aware & keep things as simple & even as possible. Life now is tougher.)
