Creating your intellectual reality
Like Venus, your Mercury describes two inner selves. One manages your mind and all its talents; the other is in charge of the work you do ... the ways you use your skills and abilities to help others and build the kind of life your want for yourself. Again, as with Venus, these are usually reduced to the basic categories of "mind" and "work," but they also include whole subdivisions of behavior and talents.
Mercury, too, aims to keep these two significant life areas working comfortably ... with each other and with your inner selves who have other interests. (Again, there are 10 major ones who comprise your psycho-spiritual Inner Family.)
Your mind ... and how you use it
Your Mercury energy wants your mind ... and the work you do with it ... to be fun, educating and useful -- for you and those you meet, live with and work for. Sometimes Life cooperates in this; sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes your different Inner Selves cooperate in this; sometimes they don't. You -- and your Mercury energy -- will act one way when things are going well. You will both become "a completely different person" when they aren't.
For general purposes, consider Mercury your Inner Self of Intellectual Engagement and Practical Applications. Essentially, Mercury gathers information on a wide range of topics ... from general to specific and from profound knowledge to trivial facts. Then he finds ways to put it to work doing useful service and support for you ... and the people you work for.
This is how he intends to improve life for everyone, using what he knows to simply make things run better. He is always gathering in new facts, always looking for ways to improve his efficiency and methods. Getting stuff done faster and more economically is what simply makes his day!
There are also many other facets to Mercury energy within these broad categories. Also, from time to time, small parts of these roles will be taken over -- and used ... or infringed on ... by other Inner Selves, but these general categories define Mercury's consistent interests ... the part of life these Inner Selves manage.
Fun things to know about
Mercury the planet
* Mercury is a terrestrial planet -- a rocky planet, one of four in our Solar System. A terrestrial planet is composed of rocks (silicates), metals (iron) -- (and dust.) The other rocky planets are Venus, Earth and Mars. The other planets with the exception of Pluto are gas giants.
* Mercury is the second densest planet. Only Earth has a higher density. Mercury is composed mainly of heavy metals & rocks -- which is the main characteristic of a terrestrial planet. But I repeat myself. (Grin.)
* Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, but is only the second hottest planet. Venus has that honor -- trapping the Sun's heat because of the clouds that envelop her surface, creating a runaway greenhouse effect.
* The surface of Mercury which faces the Sun has temperatures of up to 800° F., but on the dark side, the side facing away from the Sun, the temperature can be as low as - 280° F. This is because Mercury has no atmosphere to regular the temperature.
* Thirteen times in a century, there's a phenomenon known as a "transit of Mercury" when Mercury can be seen from Earth passing across the face of the Sun. The most recent one occurred on November 11/12 2019. The next will be November 12/13 2032. Most occur in November, but they can also occur in May. Transits occur at all because Mercury's orbit is inclined by 7 degrees to the plane of Earth's orbit.

Basic Stuff About Mercury in Astrology ---> About Mercury ---> * Mercury occupies the innermost orbit of any other planet in our Solar System. Relative to Earth it is located on the other side of Venus. Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun. * Mercury moves completely through the Zodiac in about a year, but his progression through the signs is very irregular. He goes into retrograde three to four times a year. When he's traveling direct, he stays in a sign about two weeks.
Mercury -- Physics, Metaphysics and Myth -- Part 1 ---> Physics ---> Mercury is the closest planet in our Solar System to the Sun. It is about twice the size of Pluto, but for now, it's the smallest official planet since scientists decided to mess around and demote Pluto down to "dwarf planet" status ... for a while. We'll see what the future brings. Mercury is also classified as a "terrestrial planet," meaning it's made of solid rock and dust, etc. In structure, it is the most similar planet to Earth.
Quick Notes on Mercury -- It gives you the basics -- and saves a lot of time ---> Mercury ... and duality ---> * Mercury is the closest known planet to the Sun in our Solar System. It is never more than about 28° away from the Sun, which means it is always very close to the Sun in your horoscope and is often found in the same sign as the Sun. * Mercury rules two Zodiac signs -- Gemini and Virgo.

When Mercury Leads the Sun -- Mercury passes and moves out -- in front of the Sun ---> Yellow is a Mercury color. ---> Racing ahead, out in front like he ought to ---> When Mercury leads the Sun, your intellectual shift moves gradually out of the pensive, reflective, "planning mode" you've occupied for the past several weeks, and you're ready to talk, write, and share ideas openly and freely again with "strangers."
When Mercury Trails the Sun -- Mercury retrograde moves behind the Sun ---> Yellow is a Mercury color. ---> Quiet time ---> In the next few weeks you'll become more contemplative, spend more time in planning and research, quietly consider what you've learned recently ... and what you want to do next with yourself, your life, your interests, and your mind. With Mercury in a trailing position, you will be more observant and less talkative, more intuitive ...
* Mercury ... and the Miracle of the Mind -- Astrology's Search for Intelligent Life ---> Yellow is a Mercury color! ---> Your mind makes you special ---> As an Astrologer I see both the mundaneness of common knowledge -- handling the basic facts of awareness and everyday rituals -- and a touch of miracles in Mercury.
Air Planet / Earth Sign -- Earth Planet / Earth Sign -- The Mercury in Taurus Conundrum ---> Mercury in Taurus is in one way an air planet in an earth sign ... and in another way an earth planet in an earth sign. One way works a little better than the other. Mercury as an air planet -- ruler of Gemini -- is a bit too cerebral and abstract in its approach to reality to suit the tastes of ultra-pragmatic Taurus.
Gemini & Virgo
Mercury rules 'em both
* Born with the Sun in Gemini -- The Gemini Character ---> Gemini likes to have back-up ---> Creatures of the mind ---> Gemini is one of the Zodiac's most intellectual signs. Reading, writing, learning, talking, sharing viewpoints and opinions, gathering facts and data, communicating in all the ways you can imagine is what Gemini is all about. Geminis love words ... and jokes, and puns. They love odd pieces of wisdom like trivia, and word games, and "Twenty Questions," and "Jeopardy."
* Horoscopes When the Sun is in Gemini
* Born with the Sun in Virgo -- The Virgo Character ---> Virgo's symbol is the young woman ... the virgin. ---> Virgos devote themselves to work. ---> I will try to keep this brief. I know how Virgos like efficiency. Work and service are their passions. They'll find it -- or at least what they define as it -- even if they have to make it up. A Virgo in his heart of hearts wants to be useful. Virgos can be the most selfless, dedicated, indefatigable workers in the world.
