The Dark of the Moon
A time of release / an atmosphere of preparation

Darkness is mesmerizing ... & mysterious. Each month, as the night sky goes completely dark except for the familiar, tiny pinpoints of starlight, many of Earth's people, attuned -- naturally or by design -- to the special energy of the different moon phases, feel the call of the cosmos to close down, become still & reflective, to contemplate memories & the territory within ourselves.

This time known as the Dark of the Moon is special. No doubt about it. The 2 1/2 days before the arrival of the New Moon in a new sign every month have their own special energy, power & promise. Life itself is preparing for a new, higher, different phase of learning. Experiences are still taking shape somewhere out there in the darkness -- but the call inward gets each of us ready to meet them.

So the Dark of the Moon is a time of preparation -- along with everything else. It's a time of healing, of creative incubation, of a return to our spiritual center & roots. There's so much happening inward it's no wonder life on the outside -- in the external world -- needs to go quiet for a while. Could it be any other way?

A Dark Moon Ritual
Honoring the event / claiming the power

Underlining this time with a Dark Moon ritual either every month -- or every so often -- supports & strengthens this experience of change ... transformation ... renewal. As you focus on the lessons of the recent past & formulate goals & new interests to fill the days ahead, the chance to clear your mind & set these new intentions as you release "old business" from the agenda ... well, it's not something to skip.

Just as the Dark of the Moon reminds us that we, too, operate in cycles & we, too, have infinite potential, we enrich the experience of life by being aware of it, being conscious & deliberate. We touch the mysteries, explore a little further into the underworld of myth -- & our own psyche. We learn a little more each time -- & return to the surface, holding treasures we wouldn't have found otherwise.

break

The Dark of the Moon time is special

The time of the Dark Moon is especially rich with promise for undertakings like these. The stands every month between the reality of the conscious waking world & the rich fertility of inner awareness & change. The process of transformation is, itself, a moment of renewal. And death. Let's not forget that -- or sugar-coat it. This is no time to be squeamish. Life requires boldness. Show we are up to the task.

Moon energy can be the key to the soul's greater expression. It runs on emotions, feelings & intuition. This draws us closer right there to life's spiritual expression. We leave the superficial concerns of the material world behind ... & step into the magic.

As I mentioned, ritual can play a big -- an important -- part in this. You can devise your own. You can use one designed by someone else. (There are plenty around.) Or you can set a framework & improvise, like a musician riffing on a theme. Some basics help set the stage -- & you can take it from there. Dark Moon rituals can be something you look forward to -- just for the awesomeness & the delight.

Here are some suggestions to work with, but feel free to improvise. Your ritual, your rules. Your life, your priorities. I'm good with it all.

break

The Setting

It starts with a place -- a physical location, a psychological state. Maximize the energy. Choose a night during the Dark of the Moon -- any sign works. The Dark of the Moon arrives right around the time of the New Moon every month -- during the 2 1/2 days prior & lasting about a day beyond. But don't worry if the best time -- or the time that "feels right" -- for you is even a day or so one side or the other.

You can do a Moon ritual like this any time. The prime feature is your intention. Dark of the Moon energy just sets the stage with appropriate energy -- maximum awesomeness!! (Smile.) Even then, the closest you can make it to the New Moon, the better. Whatever, just do it. Especially if you're releasing something with this ritual, something no longer appropriate, something that no longer fits your life ... the Dark of the Moon time is perfect for this.

Create the space
the right tools for the job

Find a quiet place. Create an oasis. Doing this ritual while you rest, soak, journey & visualize your intentions in a warm bath is also especially powerful. Dim the lights. Light a candle. (Color matched to the kind of work you want to do also helps. Otherwise, black, white or pink gives you an all-purpose atmosphere.

Clear the space around you. This is a good reason why a bath is a choice to seriously consider. Water element brings in the symbols of emotions, feelings, intuition, psychic awareness. It's private. It's relaxing. Water is a natural cleanser, washing away the past, supporting the future, wrapping you in its warm embrace, cleaning your aura, infusing you with new energy.

Assemble the tools you need. Bath salts, special herbs, special crystals. Music & incense. A glass of wine, maybe. More candles for extra light if that suits you. Be prepared to spend some time here. As much time as you need to "feel the ritual" work & move into your reality.

break

The inner journey

Move into your mind, your memories, your imagination, your fantasies, your inner vision. Bring up the scenes of experiences or feelings you want to deal with. You might bring a prepared list of these to your ritual -- so you don't have to remember everything at once / or worry you might skip past something important. It's not school. Cheat sheets are tools here. They're allowed -- even encouraged.

Bring it into focus. Start with the past. What specific challenges, problems, issues or memories do you want to work with? What feelings do you want to release? What stress or tense thoughts -- injuries, grudges, disappointments, conflict -- do you want to dissolve or at least weaken. Work with no more than the 5 most important for now.

(Beyond that, you risk turning the experience in to a ritual of grieving & griping. Unless that's what you intend, try limiting the scope here -- & working on others at a different time ... or maybe with a different sort of ritual.)

Visually hold these top five one at a time in your mind. Feel them enough to recognize them, but don't let them consume or further hurt you. Feel them until you know you're ready to release them -- or let them go for now, diminished in their power to affect your real life activities. Rinse them away in your bath water -- or brush them away with your hand, the way you'd brush off a bug maybe, or some dust.

break

Moving on

Meditate until you feel yourself grounded & clear. End with the declaration to release these thoughts / memories / regrets, etc. & include a statement to further release the things you haven't thought of or recognized that no longer operate for your highest good. Feel this energy clear away. Feel yourself becoming both lighter & more grounded.

Move yourself, your tools, your intentions to a "work station." Leave your bath. Dry off. Wrap up in your cozy robe or pajamas. Or if a bath wasn't part of your ritual, just bring up the lights & find a comfortable place to sit. Bring your laptop or a pen & paper to work with.

Make a quick review list of the "release work" you just did. Nothing elaborate. Just enough to remind you at a quick glance of what your priorities were, what you intend to move past ... so from time to time you can look back & gauge your progress. At the end of this list write a general more inclusive statement of release. Here's an example, but feel free to write your own if you need something else.

I bless & release all other thoughts, feelings & structures
that no longer serve my interests & my future development.

I welcome & receive new levels of learning, new dimensions
of understanding, new opportunities to grow & new blessings.

I welcome a fresh new perspective on myself, my potential & my life in the future.

I rejoice that I can live here now, build a better life, learn, prosper & move on.

break

Plotting the future

Write a To-Do list for the future. Here you want to note the things you want to achieve, things you want to create, things you want to experience. Break this into a list of "big things" you'll need to work on over time -- & a smaller list of things you can do in the next several weeks. Include "baby steps" of things on the Big List that will help you make progress. Review this list over the coming month. Follow through on your initiatives.

Write a gratitude list. This one is pretty obvious. It's a list of your blessings -- the things you are grateful for, things you recognize as your assets. Take a moment to consciously thank "All That Is" for each one.

This ends your ritual.

Basic Stuff About the Dark of the Moon -- The Science and Physics of the Phenomenon ---> Closing down ---> * The Dark of the Moon is a well-known & much celebrated part of the Lunar Cycle -- the complete monthly circle of the Moon through its different phases. But the Dark of the Moon isn't an official "moon phase." It's a period of time that straddles part of the Balsamic phase (the final phase) & part of the New Moon phase (the start of a new lunar cycle.)

Quick Notes on the Dark of the Moon -- The Psychology and Spirituality of This Special Energy ---> 3 Days of rest Every month ---> The Dark of the Moon covers a special period of time -- about 3 1/2 days surrounding the arrival of the New Moon every month. Part of it lies in the Balsamic Phase (the final phase of every Lunar Cycle) and part in the time immediately after the New Moon forms.

Defining the Dark of the Moon ---> Around the time of the New Moon ... ---> People know the difference between the New Moon and the Full Moon. We get one of each every month. They are part of everyday life. Some know those funny in-between stages have names and meanings, too. Less well known is something known as the Dark Moon -- or the Dark of the Moon -- which also happens every month in the 3 1/2 days surrounding the New Moon.

Dark Moon / New Moon ---> Moon phases ---> Moon phases. We all know they exist. Most people ignore them, except for an occasional glance to the sky. Some people know some of the names. New Moon, Crescent Moon, Half Moon, Gibbous Moon, Full Moon. Some fewer of us even know what they mean and how they bring a kind of natural order and regulation to life on Earth. Others are just proud they know as much as they do ....

Working with the Dark of the Moon -- Getting the most from this lunar phase ---> Turning inward ---> The Dark of the Moon. There's enough magic in each syllable that just the words conjure shadowy, mysterious pictures in the imagination of a world between worlds and extend shivery invitations to step out of this one into ... something else.

The Dark of the Moon -- and the Dark Side of the Moon -- Virtually the same words -- but two different things ---> Perspective ---> While making notes tonight for an article I'm writing about the New Moon in astrology, I was struck by how much our perspective always shapes our thoughts, ideas, perceptions & speech. (This is actually kind of a Mercury topic, seen from a Very Virgo angle. Perhaps it's also interesting that we're right in the middle of the New Moon in Virgo ...

Still More on the Dark of the Moon

The Mystery and Meaning of The Dark of the Moon -- Short Essays on The Dark of the Moon -- Selection 1 ---> A time of closure ---> The Dark of the Moon in Astrology is the point of transition from the final phase of closing down the business of the Moon cycle that is ending to the beginning of the succeeding Moon cycle that about to get started. It lasts about 4 - 5 days and spans the time surrounding the New Moon each month. From the moment the last sliver of light fades on the left of the old Moon until the first sliver of light appears on the right of the New Moon for the month, we are technically in the Dark of the Moon.

The Mystery and Meaning of the Dark of the Moon -- Short Essays on The Dark of the Moon -- Selection 2 ---> A moonless night -- and looking for mischief ---> A time of quiet ---> Intuition is stronger during the Dark Moon days. So is the need to rest and heal. Painful memories and unfinished business from the past -- perhaps the long ago past -- are more apt to come up ... and ask for attention. It's a time to meditate and listen -- to the whispers of your inner voices and the complex longings of your soul. Both have trouble getting past the raucous clamor of everyday life -- and in the silence of the Dark Moon they at least have a chance to break through.

Also on the Dark of the Moon

* Black Moon, Dark Moon, New Moon -- Ok, let's get this sorted out ---> Three names, three things ---> You've certainly heard the term New Moon applied to that part of the Moon's cycle when a small sliver of light appears in the western sky at dusk ... and gradually begins filling in over the next two weeks to reach the glorious display of the Full Moon before diminishing down to nothing again. Moon-watchers of all ages -- and maybe you are one -- enjoy this free celestial show every month.

The Dark of the Moon
From the Blogs, Ezines & Elsewhere

From EDA: The Dark of the Moon ---> Everyday Astrology April 21, 2020 The Dark of the Moon ---> The Dark of the Moon is the 2 1/2 day period that comes every month before the arrival of the New Moon ... for that Zodiac sign. Some Astrologers call it the "dead" Moon. Ok, that may be descriptive, but it sure sounds ominous -- and hardly poetic. Whereas the Dark of the Moon sounds ... well, mysterious and intriguing.
