A time of closure

The Dark of the Moon in Astrology is the point of transition from the final phase of closing down the business of the Moon cycle that is ending to the beginning of the succeeding Moon cycle that about to get started. It lasts about 4 - 5 days and spans the time surrounding the New Moon each month.

From the moment the last sliver of light fades on the left of the old Moon until the first sliver of light appears on the right of the New Moon for the month, we are technically in the Dark of the Moon. The reason for calling it that is pretty obvious.

It's a spooky time of inky black nights and deep psychological mysteries. Like all Moon phases it has a special purpose in the rhythm of creation that has been pretty much lost in the hectic clutter and pace of contemporary life. But that doesn't mean it's not important. And that sure doesn't mean we haven't lost something by doing that to ourselves.

The Moon is dark at the time because it's in a position where there is no solar reflection. It's aligning with the Sun such that all the reflected light that typically comes to us as moonlight is now on what's always been known as the dark side of the Moon -- the part we've seen only in photos from space because the Moon always keeps a single side toward us on Earth.

So in the Dark of the Moon, the Moon itself is lost in the Sun's glare and it basically tracks with the Sun from sunrise to sundown. So it's not present at all in the night sky ... until the orbits no longer synchronize ... and we start getting sunlight reflections again.

All this New Moon business and timing has some confusion around it. For Astrologers the New Moon begins at the moment the Moon joins the Sun in the sky in the same degree and minute of arc in the Zodiac. But many others prefer to hold off on their New Moon business until that razor-thin crescent of light appears in the evening sky.

Societies that base their calculations on a lunar calendar have religious figures who actually watch for this in order to officially declare that the next New Moon cycle has begun. (Some religious observances and traditions depend on this kind of timing.)

The psychological pull inward during the Dark of the Moon, however, is unmistakable if you're paying attention -- and sometimes even when you're not. Many times I'll hit a section of days in an otherwise overheated schedule where suddenly *I need a lot more sleep* than usual ... and there's no getting around it.

When I check with the calendar, lo and behold, were at that time of the month. So I've stopped being surprised. The more conscious your life, the more you'll notice these things. And as I just noted, even when you get overwhelmed -- the rhythm remains.

You sleep more. You dream more. You get lost in reverie more easily. Try it yourself ... and you'll prove it to yourself. There's no way I can argue with that.

So, in these days of darkness, let your focus release the concerns of outer life for a while ... and turn inward, to your landscape of emotions, feelings, intuition and memories. Step into this natural time of reflection and contemplation, pensive fantasies and powerful daydreams.

This inner reality is just as valid as your outer-world waking one ... and it comes to you in dreams, speculations, memories and visions. The realm of imagination takes over -- and invites you to get lost there for a while.

It's a good time to take stock ... and plan ... and set new intentions. In the quiet blessing of idleness and solitude, you can find the peace and quiet to hear yourself think. It's a realm rich with untapped potential.

Some Astrologers call it the "dead" Moon. Ok, that may be descriptive, but it sure sounds ominous -- and hardly poetic. Whereas the Dark of the Moon sounds ... well, mysterious and intriguing.
